3AW Pub Awards: 3rd Quarter
August:
Seven Creeks, Euroa,
Still have fond memories of this one some 4 months after the visit. Large, sprawling backyard, music on a monthly basis and simply a lovely pub, from the external facade to the inviting, almost-time-forgotten dining room. I remain largely sceptical about country pub dining – but the Seven Creeks allayed any fears. In my top 4 for the year.
September:
Gunn Island, Middle Park
I am convinced (in spite of some user feedback) that this pub can return to former glories. The food and beverage is aimed higher than that the average pub, while trying to remain fiercely loyal to the locals. And the area demands this due to hot competition. My only issue is something that is out of the hands of the owners and that is the size of the pub can give you the impression that it is a little sterile. Pricing very fair for what you get.
October
Hotel Nest, Albert Park
I will revisit in 2009 as I sense the old Red Eagle will be the finished article by then after completion of the beer garden. This is another pub that belies first impressions: that is the pub is all about top end food. It is much more than that. It is a place to meet, socialise and enjoy. Whatever the budget, the Nest can accommodate.
November
Prahran Hotel, Windsor
Near enough to a dead-heat between Bells and this one. I chose the Prahran. This is very user friendly, cleverly set out, and has a good galley producing sharper edged pub grub. Good range of beers and if the bar-maid only just smiled a fraction more………………….. Sorry I forgot I was in Prahran!!!
