A Sheriff's department crackdown on fine evaders has seen more than a dozen vehicles being abandoned on a highway in Werribee.

The story originated on the Rumour File under the name - 'He wore a blazing saddle'

Read what A Department of Justice spokesperson released to 3AW and listen to the rumour as fact below

“On Sunday 19 February, Sheriff’s officers conducted an operation on the Princess Freeway in Werribee. The roadblock was conducted by the Sheriff's Office and Victoria Police to identify individuals with outstanding infringement warrants."

“15 vehicles with wheel clamps remain, in a safe location, on the centre median strip as drivers were unable to satisfy their outstanding fines at the time. If these matters are dealt with today, clamps will be removed. If the outstanding fines are not dealt with, vehicles will be detained and removed to storage pending sale."

“The majority of fines issued in Victoria are paid promptly but a minority of the community breach court orders and do not pay their fines.

“There are a range of payment options available for people who are having difficulty paying their outstanding fines.

“Ignoring your fines does not make them go away.”
