Water prices to sky-rocket

Posted by: 3AW Breakfast | 5 January, 2009 - 8:32 AM

A new four-year water pricing regime for Melbourne will begin on July 1, 2009, and water retailers are threatening to raise prices by nearly 100 per cent (97) by 2013.

As the state government urges Melburnians to reduce their water consumption to 155 litres a day per person - a target which was reached last week (average of 149) - it is now believed the reduction in consumption will cause the price hike.

Tony Kelly from Yarra Valley Water attempted to justify the water retailers' plans and took calls from listeners.

Listen to his response and decide for yourself - is the possible price increase justified?

  • The water companies encourage us to cut down on water use and in doing so we see our public and private gardens die. To reward us for being economical with water the price is going to be doubled. All water companies have to pay a dividend to the government. Is this money going into infrastructure or just in to government coffers

  • yarra valley water and the other water retailers in melbourne are not private and are owned by the state government, i dont understand this whole thing about privatisation and money grabbing, the money spent on bills go directly to infrastructure and services, its not like the price is going up for profit, if you read up on this stopped your rant and did a little research first youd not embaress yourselves.
