Alex Rance injured after head clash
SATURDAY 11PM: Promising Richmond rookie Alex Rance has sustained three facial fractures (cheekbone) as a result of his terrible head-clash with Lion Troy Selwood in his side's loss on Saturday at the MCG.
Rance will undergo surgery at Epworth Hospital on Sunday morning and is expected to miss at least the next three weeks.
SATURDAY 6PM: Richmond youngster Alex Rance has a suspected fractured cheekbone after he was rushed to hospital following a sickening head-clash with Brisbane Lion Troy Selwood during the third term of Brisbane's win on Saturday.
In what was a classic 50-50 loose ball, both players ran in at full pace from opposite angles. With their eyes only on the Sherrin – Rance and Selwood's heads then smashed into each other as they fought for possession.
Rance - son of former West Coast Eagle Murray Rance - was knocked out completely, forcing the mobile ambulance to enter the arena and take him away. Selwood appeared to take several minutes to regain full consciousness before he managed to walk off the field aided by trainers.
Selwood has suffered no injury, according to the Lions.
3AW Football boundary rider Scott Cummings, who said he could hear the 'crack of the heads', told listeners during the final term Rance had started speaking and likely had suffered a broken cheekbone.
After the match, Tigers coach Terry Wallace said Rance's condition would be clearer on Sunday.
"We think it's more cheekbone at this stage than anything else, but obviously we'll get the reports back from those scans and we'll pass them on," Wallace said. "His family is with him and for that point of view he's OK, but obviously you have to see what damage is there."
"It was horrific – I was involved when Chris Hyde fractured his skull, and that was one of those car crash-type scenarios. Two blokes absolutely equally committed to the contest, and people who say that our game's not tough … it astounds me at times. You've got to be down at ground level to see how hard they hit."
"It was a fair-dinkum car crash."
