UPDATE: The AFL has just confirmed the report 3AW went with on the Drive program.

"The match review panel determined a sanction of $4,000. In summary, he can accept a $3000 sanction with an early plea," said the AFL in a statement.

"The charge was laid under the misconduct provisions in the Table of Offences, whereby the Match Review Panel can impose a financial sanction for a misconduct offence that is not classified under the table."

"The Match Review Panel took into account the medical report on player Thompson and the relevant footage in determining a charge of rough conduct was not appropriate in the circumstances of this case."

Common sense prevails?

HOW DID OTHER PLAYERS FARE?

UPDATE: Western Bulldogs star Barry Hall has been cleared to play in his side's clash with Essendon on Friday night after the Match Review Panel chose to only fine the full-forward for his headlock on North Melbourne defender Scott Thompson, according to Sports Today's 'Whispers'.

The Match Review Panel will fine Hall $4,000 meaning the charge must have gone from rough conduct to misconduct, 'Whispers' has told 3AW's Brian Taylor.

Hall, who has a dodgy past at the AFL tribunal, was supported by most footy commentators and the public since he was put on report for his role in the melee - which can be watched below - during the Dogs' big win.

SUNDAY: Watch the video of Barry Hall putting North Melbourne defender Scott Thompson in a headlock after lots of niggle in the build-up to the incident which sees Hall on report.

Most 3AW commentators believe Hall should certainly not be penalised any 'weeks', and if anything, should only receive a fine from the Match Review Panel.

3AW Football's Tribunal Expert, Graeme Bond, says Hall has been charged with 'engaging in rough conducting which in the circumstances is unreasonable'.

"Is what Barry Hall did 'unreasonable'? That will be the question the Match Review Panel will ask to determine whether they proceed ... if they go ahead with the charge certainly the contact is high, certainly the impact is slightly above low, so that's medium, and the conduct wouldn't be negligent it would be reckless," said Bond before adding. "That equates to 225 points, plus a 50% loading, plus 96 carryover points which means the best he could hope for is a four-week penalty that would come to down to three with a guilty plea."

"If they categorise it as negligent and low impact it still be two weeks plus the loading, plus the carryover points which would be three-week penalty down to two with a guilty plea."

"The whole thing here is was what Barry Hall did 'unreasonable' in those circumstances. He didn't instigate it, he was passive initially and he had to defend himself. That will be a very good defence but whether the Match Review Panel decide that we will have to wait and see on Monday."

3AW.com.au will publish the Match Review Panel findings as soon as they come through on Monday afternoon.

  • The rules protect the instigator...It's a joke. If I were Barry Hall I would have started swinging. If footy had not been softened almost to the point of 'netball contact' in the last 19 years, the real perpetrator might have been dealt the correct punishment.

  • Football is going soft - its not as if Thompson pole axed Hall. Thompson was using gamesmanship and Hall took it hook line and sinker - more fool Hall! Hall is going to have to accept that he will be targetted in matches because of his short fuze and learn to control it. If he didn't react so excessively and presictably he would most likely be left alone.

PS. Great game Dee's - nice one for Jimmy.

  • Brayshaw should be as proud of Thompson and his team as he obviously is of his team's 70 point defeat by Footscray.

Concentrate on football and not on cheap shots and on field niggles North, and you may be better off.
