Barry Hall's report explained

Posted by: Ben Wise | 24 May, 2010 - 8:38 AM

REPORT: Barry Hall's stoush with North Melbourne's Scott Thompson goes before the match review panel which will decide what part provocation played in the Bulldog applying a headlock on his opponent for 15 seconds.

Hall retaliated when he was knocked over by Thompson while tying up his bootlaces and their wrestle sparked a melee.

Clinical psychologist Grant Brecht - who worked with Hall at the Sydney Swans - told 3AW Breakfast the Bulldog plays the game "just below aggressive".

3AW Football's Tribunal Expert, Graeme Bond, says Hall has been charged with 'engaging in rough conducting which in the circumstances is unreasonable'.

"Is what Barry Hall did 'unreasonable'? That will be the question the Match Review Panel will ask to determine whether they proceed ... if they go ahead with the charge certainly the contact is high, certainly the impact is slightly above low, so that's medium, and the conduct wouldn't be negligent it would be reckless," said Bond before adding. "That equates to 225 points, plus a 50% loading, plus 96 carryover points which means the best he could hope for is a four-week penalty that would come to down to three with a guilty plea."

"If they categorise it as negligent and low impact it still be two weeks plus the loading, plus the carryover points which would be three-week penalty down to two with a guilty plea."

"The whole thing here is was what Barry Hall did 'unreasonable' in those circumstances. He didn't instigate it, he was passive initially and he had to defend himself. That will be a very good defence but whether the Match Review Panel decide that we will have to wait and see on Monday."

3AW.com.au will publish the Match Review Panel findings as soon as they come through on Monday afternoon.

  • No 16 for Nth Melbourne needs to grow up and concentrate on the game at hand. This is professional football and Barry Hall was professional about the way he handled it. I bet that No 16 from Nth Melbourne would not do that to Barry in a street with no one around!

  • Give Barry a fair go. The barry Hall of past days would have king hit this guy. But no he reacted in my mind with controlled defence of himself. He should not be suspended.

  • I don't follow football at all, but hubby does & so I was watching this match on & off & saw Barry Hall being picked on, the poor bloke tried over & over again to get away from the immature Nth melb player. I admire Barry's restraint - umpiers & media seemed to be just watching & waiting for Barry to snap like watching an animal being teased. You did well Barry! Shame on Nth melb.
