Dane Swan wins AFPLA MVP
Collingwood midfielder Dane Swan has become just the second Magpies player to win the Leigh Matthews Trophy after being voted by his peers as the AFL Players’ Association Most Valuable Player for 2010.
Swan secured 972 votes, on the 3-2-1 basis. Luke Hodge finished second (603 votes), Gary Ablett third (562), Aaron Sandilands fourth (279) and Joel Selwood (166) completed the top five.
Swan becomes the first Collingwood player to win the MVP Award since Darren Milane in 1990.
“It is very humbling and a great honour to win this award voted by my fellow players,” Swan said. “The respect that the players have for this award is enormous and as the only player voted awards it is one of the highest honours you can receive in this game.”
Statistically, Swan has had an incredible season, playing all 22 matches at an average of 31.9 disposals a game.
Swan’s 34-disposal effort against Hawthorn in Round 22 made him the first player in AFL history to have 30 touches or more in 11 straight games.
Other footy-related AFLPA Awards:
- Luke Hodge won the Robert Rose Most Courageous Player Award. Hodge (200 votes) finished ahead of Joel Selwood
(173) and Lenny Hayes (125).
