Demetriou pays tribute to Ben Cousins

AFL STATEMENT: AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou has said he was pleased for Ben Cousins that the Brownlow Medallist had been able to leave AFL football on his terms.

"On behalf of the AFL Commission, I want to wish Ben well for the future and for whatever he does next with his life," Demetriou said.

"He should be remembered as an outstanding footballer – a premiership player and Brownlow Medallist among his many achievements – and a player who drove himself to get the absolute best from his skills during his time in the game."

Demetriou said he was pleased the game had been able to provide the structure and the support for Cousins to get his life in order but, most importantly, that Cousins had taken the chance that was afforded to him and been able to return to the highest level, and choose the timing of his retirement.

"Ben has shown that if you have a serious problem in your life and you choose to seek help, you can overcome addiction with the support of friends and family," said Demetriou. "His story is one that highlights the dangers of drugs but also shows that people can change their behaviour."

Cousins will be invited to join the parade of retiring greats at the 2010 AFL Grand Final, along with all those players who have reached 200 games over the course of their career and have announced their retirement since the 2009 Grand Final.
