Flares let off by idiotic fans at Etihad
Police will likely investigate how flares came to be set off in the
crowd at Etihad Stadium after St kilda beat the Western Bulldogs on
Saturday night.
It appeared up to three flares were ignited on the lower deck of the Port Philip Bay or Lockett end of the stadium, with fans - including children - still trying to leave the stands.
The flares were put out within minutes.
3AW Football's Tony Leonard perhaps summed it up best when he labelled the act as 'rank stupidity'.
Flares have long been a feature at soccer games around the world, with a 13-year-old killed by a thrown flare during a La Liga (Spainish Premier League) match in 1992.
Did you see Saturday night's incident?
Saints smash the Bulldogs
St Kilda has extended its undefeated run to 17 matches after a big
first half set up a 16.10 (105) to 9.7 (61) victory over the Western
Bulldogs on Saturday night in front of over 45,000 at Etihad Stadium.

A flare was dropped at my feet and who-ever dropped it took off so I didn't see their face. The guy next to me picked it up for a couple of seconds and held it aloft but it wasn't him that set it off.

Aussie Rules in general is becoming far more violent for spectators to attend. I feel far safer with my family at Melbourne Victory games, who would have thought that 5 years ago?

I guess now AFL fans know how Soccer fans in this country feel. I wonder will this be labelled as Stupid "AFL" fans or another excuse to attack soccer?
For the integrity of the melbourne media I hope its the formerErnie Sunday 26 July, 2009 - 11:44 AM -
I was there, about one bay away. Utterly disgraceful!St Kilda cheersquad member Jase 'the Ace' had an embarassed look on his face. It was as orange and red as the flare. If Etihad stadium security and the AFL are not tough this could be the new dawn of celebrating a win.
