Hurley in alleged drunken assault
Essendon young gun Michael Hurley faces possible charges over an alleged incident involving an Indian cab driver overnight.
AFL boss Andrew Demetriou confirmed with 3AW Hurley had been in lock-up overnight, saying Essendon Football Club contacted the league to report the apparently alcohol-fuelled incident.
"Ok, we have confirmed that one of the most promising players in the AFL is in Police custody," said 3AW's Neil Mitchell when he broke news of the alleged assault.
"Michael Hurley - the Essendon player who almost single-handedly got Essendon into the finals with a brilliant second half against Hawthorn who has been compared by some as the next Jonathan Brown - is being interviewed by Police after an incident I believe, with an Indian taxi driver."
"There is a possibility of charges and John Brumby certainly won't want to hear that if that's right in India. Anyway he is in custody and being interviewed by Police. More details will come out through the day but we have confirmed that."
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said a 19-year-old Rosanna man was being questioned by police in relation to an assault on a taxi driver in Hoddle Street, Richmond about 5.30am.
The driver was kicked and punched by a passenger after a dispute over a fare from South Melbourne, she said.
The taxi driver suffered minor injuries and was not taken to hospital.
Outgoing Essendon managing director Peter Jackson said the details of the incident are still being investigated and confirmed the club has now spoken to Hurley and the Victoria Police.
"We are extremely disappointed that Michael was out so late and that he put himself in a situation where an incident occurred," Mr Jackson said. "He started drinking at the Grand Final Footy Show after-party and by night's end he had clearly had too much to drink."
"As a club we work with our players to help them make good choices - and the vast majority do - so it is disappointing and unacceptable that this situation has occurred. We also run a number of community programs where our players work with young people to educate them about the dangers associated with binge drinking."
"We are treating the matter very seriously and will take appropriate action once the details are clear. The club will continue speaking with Michael and he will assist police anyway he can."
Neil Mitchell slams Brendan Fevola

interview regarding his behaviour.

How bright is the Taxi driver? Hurley wants a burger, gets out to go into the store to buy one and the taxi driver thinks he is doing a bolt. What, did he believe Hurley was going to sleep there or run out the back door to catch another taxi?

Oh, I can see where this is going; AFL players will soon be provided with chauffeur driven transport (for free) to get them to and from bars, clubs etc. Much like pollies, and not surprisingly, many of them earn (and drink?) more than most pollies?
That should keep them safe from opportunistic taxi drivers and overenthusiastic bouncers and all the other random trouble makers who complicate their otherwise perfect live$, so they can have a quiet drink without consequences.
Long live the AFLCanubelieveit Sunday 27 September, 2009 - 4:27 PM -
once again alcohol is involved another football player that cant hold his drink and it will continue while this drinking culture continues.

The AFL will protect him. AFL players could sell asbestos and the AFL would put a spin on it
