Is Andrew Lovett copping raw deal?

Posted by: Sports Today | 13 January, 2010 - 6:23 PM

ABOVE: Dwayne Russell from Sports Today says Andrew Lovett is being victimised by St Kilda given he has been only linked to an alleged rape - not actually charged with a criminal offence.

Do you agree with how the Saints have handled the Lovett matter so far?

PLEASE NOTE: This blog is not to determine Lovett's guilt, innocence or otherwise - it is simply a blog to debate the above question?

3AW REPORT (December 24, 2009): St Kilda Football Club has confirmed Victoria Police are investigating allegations made by a woman against Saints player Andrew Lovett, which is reported to have occurred in Melbourne in the early hours of this morning.

The club says it's 'currently gaining a better understanding of these allegations' and is 'treating the matter very seriously'.

"At this time, the club has suspended Andrew Lovett indefinitely," said the Saints in a statement. "Andrew will not be involved with the club in any shape or form until a further decision is made. We are informed that when Victoria Police have completed their investigation, they will decide whether or not he will be charged."

"Victoria Police have confirmed that there is no suggestion of improper conduct of any other Saints players."

3AW beieves the allegations relate to an incident in Port Melbourne overnight which resulted in paramedics being called to attend to a 23-year-old woman.

Lovett has a long history with off-field issues and alcohol and was a non-factor in his last game for Essendon in its elimination final loss.

Blog comments Your Say

  • They might as well sack Montagna and Milne while they are at it. Things were very hushed up by St. Kilda then.

Obviously Lovett wasn't in favour beforehand and St. Kilda wasn't prepared to hang onto him because they didn't need him badly enough.

The names Montagna and Milne stick firmly on my mind after all these years and i have no respect for them.

  • Football is as much about confidence as it is skill.
Because they are put up as super heroes, they think they are invincible.
Clubs are all about winning so they won't make the hard sacrifice.
If a player causes embarresment to the club he should be penalised.
Fining is not the answer as they earn heaps of money.
Embarresment is the answer, so St Kilda has done the right thing, by suspending him.
They could consider after a player misbehaves to cancel his contract and put him on a first year contract.
Maybe then we will see some sense come back.

  • Regardless of the criminal allegations any employee must act according to the code of conduct of their organisation.

Suspension for breach of the CoC is an administrative action and is only required to meet the burden of "is it more likely than not that the CoC was breached?"

If it meets this test then suspension is appropriate. Given this player has a history of poor behaviour then he should be sacked.

  • Honestly, when are we going to stop putting these overpaid turds on pedestals? Money in pocket, time on their hands and they have an arrogance that's second to none. Hurd, Buckley, Paul Kelly, now these are role models and know how to behave, why can't these idiots take a leaf. This boys club in the median needs to end and stop covering for and excusing this crap, like Fevola.
