Matthew Lloyd has announced his retirement from the game on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old, who was suspended for four matches in what was his last-ever match against Hawthorn in Round 22, has decided against playing on despite Essendon offering him a one-year deal.

Lloyd leaves the games as one of the all-time greats having kicked 926 goals from 270 matches - the seventh-highest goal return in AFL history and the most by an Essendon player.

Despite speculation earlier this month that Lloyd could play elsewhere next year it is believed he will retire and entertain no notion of a comeback with another club.

Lloyd met with Essendon coach Matthew Knights and Football Operations Manager Paul Hamilton on Tuesday and told them he would be leaving the game.

Lloyd's retirement follows that of Scott Lucas, who played with Lloyd in the 2000 Essendon premiership side.

The Bombers will now likely rely on young gun Michael Hurley and Jay Neagle to be the forward targets for the team knocked out of the finals race by Adelaide this season.

Lloyd wrote in his column on Sunday that there was no truth to rumours he would only play on if he was kept in the full forwrad position all year.

''There have been suggestions I only want to play at full-forward. Rubbish,'' he wrote.

''There have been suggestions I want a guarantee I won't play for Bendigo. Absolute rubbish. Some have even suggested I'm not comfortable taking on a mentoring role. That is an insult.''

Essendon must now decide on a new captain, with Jobe Watson and David Hille among the leading candidates.
