EARLIER: With Ben Cousins' retirement now official, Neil Mitchell reflects on the legacy of the Brownlow Medalist and recovering drug addict.

Neil wishes Cousins well but says: "He is not a great role message, he is not a great role model ... I think the message from Ben Cousins has been awful."

"All through his addiction he's been superfit. He's looked healthy. He's done stupid things but until he was suspended he maintained a high profile and challenging sports career. Great football career even though he was addicted."

"Where's the downside in that?"

Cousin's former manager Ricky Nixon says of Cousins: "He's a very talented person. Whether it's football or whether it's presenting himself in the media. The way he's remained calm during this whole five or six year reality program has been amazing in some ways."

"Personally I think he's well suited to TV. He's got that smile."

Nixon did highlight, however, that life will be very tough initially for the West Coast legend.

""The adrenalin rush of playing in front of 100,000 people doesn't match normal daily life," said Nixon on Cousins' new battle to stay clean.

Meanwhile, Cousins' friend and former team-mate has paid an emotional tribute to the troubled star and says Cousins will have no problems handling the next chapter in his life.

"I had a chat to Cuzzy this morning before the press conference. It takes a lot of character to be able to go out and share the most intimate times of your personal life and not only was he a great footballer but there's a side of Ben Cousins that kind of brought him to his knees ... and he's prepared to show that to the rest of the world."

"I don't think he will have problems at all."

Debate rages over very largely 'unseen' documentary Debate continues to rage over the Ben Cousins documentary, which most of Australia has not seen. While it's hard for many to comment on something they haven't seen, Joanne - who lost her son to drugs - has earned her right to share a strong view.

  • The current board of the AFL are pathetic self scented beaurocrats earning big $$$$$ and turning this game into netball , they are accessories to crime, they were aware Tuck had been using drugs on two previous occasions and did nothing.
Tuck received 12 weeks under the 3 strike policy, this footballer has the brain of a peanut, how could anyone be so stupid and get caught on three occasions? You would have to be on drugs to be so stupid!
Cousins received 12 months and he was never caught by the AFL, perhaps their Investigation team are on non prescription medication, Cousins admitted to taking drugs and the Afl were running for cover , because their 3 strike policy does not work.
Cousins was punished because the Afl never could pin anything on him, perhaps Cousins should have pleaded he was suffering depression!
On the subject of cover ups what is the latest on the Milne rape cover up, the Afl and Vic Pol have gone very quite on this ! hmmmm wonder why, and how did Eddie McGuire get his hands on confidential Vic Pol criminal record of Ben Cousins?
How many lunches did Christine Nixon and Andrew Demetriou have together? Was it not Christine that advised collingwood not to employ cousins?
    I smell a rat

  • He's just a good looking guy who played with drugs. To me he comes across as very insincere and like a naughty school boy. I feel for his family and I don't think we have heard the end of this.

  • Neil, totally agree... Ben Cousins is a poser and an arrogant twit. His WOW doco last night was insincere, no remorse or regrets there. He just loves himself, and being such a looker, he will have the gullible younger set hoodwinked......

  • Good on you Neil for saying what some of out here think, Cousins got paid a lot of money and he chose to blow it up his nose. He was a recreational user, he liked how it made him feel and he only came clean because he got caught. Poor pitiful Ben Cousins he's had such a hard life, spare a thought for the poor and neglected children in our society the ones who are abused by adults and abuse themselves as a consequence.
