1,700 missed calls for Rob Oakeshott
It's not just the eccentric telephone manner of Liberal Senator Bill Heffernan that has been bedeviling one of Canberra's most sought-after politicians.
Independent MP Rob Oakeshott is having major difficulties keeping up with the enormous volume of incoming communication since the federal election made him a pivotal powerbroker.
In just the four days after the election, Mr Oakeshott's mobile phone registered more than 1700 missed calls and voicemail messages.
More than 1700 missed calls in four days
It's no wonder then that Senator Heffernan - who has a habit of pulling the legs of fellow politicians and journalists when he calls - rang the family home; introducing himself to Mr Oakeshott's wife as 'the devil'.
That unusual call was just one of hundreds coming from as far afield as the United Kingdom and Malaysia since it became clear that Mr Oakeshott and three other independents will hold the balance of power in the new Parliament.
By Wednesday last week, Mr Oakeshott's mobile phone had registered more than 1700 missed calls and voicemail messages.
A spokesman for Mr Oakeshott said yesterday that the total number of phone calls, texts, emails and letters coming into Mr Oakeshott's offices in Canberra and in the northern NSW electorate of Lyne was running at up to 1000 a day. The other independents, including Bob Katter, have also spoken about the enormous feedback and free advice they have been getting.
''It's been very busy since Monday last week when people started getting their heads around the election outcome,'' the spokesman said.
''Being able to clear out the email inbox has been a big challenge. We are doing the best we can to acknowledge the calls and emails with the resources available to us.''
People from both within the electorate and from outside, including overseas, were putting their views on how Mr Oakeshott should use his balance of power position.
''It's an indication of how far and wide-reaching the interest is.''
The spokesman said the emails coming in were a mixture of form letters with the same words being sent by different people and individually-penned messages.
Time to reject three amigos?
HINCH BLOG: "When does one of these people who will be our next prime minister say: Enough is enough. Thus far and no further." Hinch appears to have had enough of the political pandering and reveals Lindsay Tanner is still being paid while we're all 'hung'.

In 2008 I was silly enough to actually work on election day handing out â??How to Vote INDEPENDENTâ?? â?? Rob Oakeshott.
He had earlier been a National representative in the NSW government.

Julia Gillard said she wouldn't move into The Lodge unless elected by the Australian people. The Australian people didn't make Julia Prime Minister two independents did. She should stay in Altona!

Hey, Julia, you said you wouldn't move into the Lodge until elected by the Australian people. Guess this will be the first promise you break.
