STEVE MURPHY: Campaign 2010 has turned out to be the most dramatic and historic in more than years with Australia set to have a minority Government led by Tony Abbott with the support of three independents, all of whom were once members of the National Party.

History was made here in Victoria with the Greens gaining their first House of Representatives seat with Adam Bandt winning the formerly safe Labor seat of Melbourne.

History has been made with Julia Gillard becoming the shortest serving Prime Minister the country has seen, with the exception of when we had caretakers who temporarily assumed the top job on the death of an incumbent.

Queensland and New South Wales were bloodbath states for Labor where a raft seats they gained in the Kevin-07 landslide were swept away.

On the numbers at the close of counting the likely outcome will be ALP 72 members, the Coalition 73, Independents 4 (one of whom would likely vote with Labor) and 1 Green.

The machine men in the ALP – Bill Shorten, Karl Bitar, Mark Arbib, David Feeney and others along with a willing Julia Gillard who cut down Kevin Rudd will have a lot to answer for and the recriminations within the Labor Party will be swift, severe and the enmities long lasting.

The defeat of a first term Labor Government, after spending almost 11 years in the wilderness during the Howard years will rock Labor to its core.

For Tony Abbott, the self described political love child of John Howard and Bronwyn Bishop, it is a dream unimagined. No one within the Liberal Party believed when they elected Abbott leader by one vote about 9 months ago that regaining Government was even a remote possibility.

Abbott was elected Leader to restore the party’s base, which had been slowly drifting away under Malcolm Turnbull. Back then it was about positioning the Party for an honourable loss.

Abbott brought the Liberals together and they have been remarkably disciplined since his elevation. He ran the better campaign. He was disciplined. He played to the disenchantment with the Labor brand in NSW and tapped the disgust of Queensland voters at the political assassination of one of their own – Kevin Rudd.

In the rest of the country it was about not frightening the horses. He did the job.

Just what style of Government and what kind of agenda it will have is anyone’s guess. That will largely be determined during the horse trading that will come over the next few weeks when negotiations begin with three independents – Rob Oakshott, Tony Windsor and Bob Katter junior.

It won’t be an easy road for a Prime Minister Abbott. He will require skill, patience and the ability to compromise just to get a working, stable Government together.

If he achieves that then he has to keep everyone in the tent and deal with a very hostile and left leaning senate that is likely to have 41 Labor and Green members and 35 Coalition members.

It’s not inconceivable that we will all be off the polls again within 18 months.

Hinch says Gillard will 'regret this forever'

  • Richard - I guess that means that you voted for Abbott because he WASN'T a woman!

    Justine Saturday 28 August, 2010 - 12:56 AM
  • Richard, the average male out there, you could write his knowledge of women's sexuality on a postage stamp~! Women may be subject to hormonal influences, but they are FAR from being ignorant~! Most men gather in little groups because they are incapable of independent thinking~! In most cases, WOMEN manage the finances & choose independent living by choice~! They also have considerable input into small business in this state. I think they can manage a ballot paper...

  • Richard, I can see you will be popular. It's like saying all women are incapable of independent clear thinking. Rubbish~! Women regularly outperform males in scholastic pursuits, including clear thinking, and not just education. Obviously you've never been to university~! Women feature VERY highly in sciences, mathematics, law, medicine & engineering. They dominate year 12 studies~! So in your opinion women are just 'pretty little things' that need men around to make political decisions for them? Richard, stick to the cave, you'll be a lot safer~! lol

  • The biggest problem we have in this country is too many incompetent people in positions of management who weed out any intelligent people from their companies, particularly any person who may be any potential future threat to them. They always use that classic line - 'you're over qualified'. We have so much wasted ability & ''intelligence'' being frustrated by company HR representatives & employment organizations, and industry wonders why our BEST potential staff head off overseas. We don't provide them with opportunities in this country, whereas overseas companies INSTANTLY recognize their potential & put them to work. We are amongst the leaders in medical research, with some minor contribution to various technologies, but overall we produce stuff all, and you wonder why Asians look at Australians with such contempt~! The Japanese started the technology boom, and the North Koreans have taken it to an art form. Look at companies like LG, Samsung, their car makers, ship builders, heavy industry & many other forms of advanced technology. Cheap wages may have been the initial driving force, but not these days. Their standard of living is so superior compared to ours, it's not funny~! China is no different & will rapidly eclipse western nations. We will remain the same backward HICK nation who lives off raw materials, wheat & beef, that's providing we haven't already sold the country~! Three cheers for Australia. Whoopee~! Our political system is just one of many problems in this country. Self interest groups & DUMB management are killing this country~!
