Australian Test team: First Test
NSW fast bowler Doug Bollinger has been named in the Australian squad to face the West Indies in the first Test starting in Brisbane next Thursday.
Bollinger's selection has come at the expense of fellow Blues paceman Stuart Clark who played in the final Ashes Test at the Oval in August.
National selection chairman Andrew Hilditch said the core of the Ashes squad deserved to retain their places.
"Losing the Ashes was obviously extremely disappointing but the nucleus of the side performed very well individually. We’re confident this young side will continue to develop as we move into this exciting Test series at home but also continue to prepare for an Ashes series, which is now only 12 months away," said Hildtich.
Hilditch said Clark was unlucky not to retain his place.
"Stuart is extremely unlucky to miss selection but we have been very impressed with Doug’s form in the recent one-day series in India and feel he deserves this opportunity in the Australian squad," said Hilditch.
Young opening batsman Phillip Hughes remains on the outer with makeshift opener Shane Watson to partner Simon Katich at the top of the order.
Hilditch said that Hughes was considered for selection and could have forced his way back into the Test side with some big scores in the Sheffield Shield matches.
But the selection panel was disappointed with Hughes’s slow start to the domestic season including his score of 12 in the current match against Tasmania at the SCG.
Bollinger has played one Test for Australia, against South Africa in Sydney in January.
After touring South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, Bollinger missed selection for the Ashes series but was recalled to the Australian one-day squad for the tour of India, where he won the man of the match award in the final match in Guwahati.
