TUESDAY: Bert and Pattie Newton have revealed their son Mathew was told when he was aged 14 that he might be suffering from bipolar disorder.
The actor is on suicide watch in a psychiatric clinic in Sydney.
He allegedly assaulted former girlfriend Rachel Taylor in a Rome hotel room two weeks ago.
Patti Newton has told Channel 9 her son suffers psychiatric episodes beyond his control.
MONDAY: Peter Ford today discussed the interview Channel Nine has in the can with Bert and Patti Newton about the fall from grace of their son, Matthew.
Ford says Matthew is currently on suicide watch in a psychiatric facility, and that Bert and Patti do not defend his actions in Rome where he allegedly bashed his then girlfriend, Rachel Taylor.
"Bert and Patti are downtrodden, but they're not giving up," says Ford.
In the interview, Bert admits he learned a number of Matthew's indiscretions through media reports.
"When it concerns your child you say 'of course we love him and support him' .. but I don;t support or condone any of the things that have happened."
For her part, Patti Newton says she believes the major issues facing her son are of the mental health nature - not of the 'drugs and alcohol' nature.
Newton has 'shown no remorse'
3AW AUDIO: Actor Matthew Newton is being held in a pyschiatric facility after allegedly attacking his former girlfriend. Newton's 'TV career is finished' says Neil Mitchell. 3AW Mornings speaks to anti-violence campaigner Phil Cleary about Newton. Have a listen to all the audio here.

I am confused as to where all these lay people think they have acquired the expertise to diagnose Matthew Newton with physchiatric mood disorders. It would be useful to get perhaps ONE professional Masters in Psychiatry to provide an opinion. As someone who suffers from type one bipolar it is categorically obvious that his situation is not the case. The case is that the poor man is in severe and dangerous pain and needs urgent hel. The public scrutinity attached with media and speculative perspecution will likely recult in him wanting to or actually attmepting to take him own life. The question is - is this just punishment? The scenario with Rachel obviously requires appropriate inviestification. It would be good if the vilification could cease, expert medical professionals could provide the help required and the ill informed public could go back to watching TV, which requires a lot of talent.

I have met Matt on a few occasions and he has always come across as a warm and friendly person. I am sorry to heard of his situation. I have a friend that has been in a similar situation and finally the meds are kicking in and he's beginning to feel himself again. Go well Matt
