Plant of the Week

Lily of the Valley (Convallaria)
An old fashioned favourite making a come back. Loved for its fragrant white pearly flowers. Best grown in humus rich soil with a morning sun aspect. Combines well with Solomen’s Seal (Polygonatum multiflorum)

Fragrance in the winter garden
Apart from the ever popular daphne to provide fragrance at this time of the year, e.g.
•    Osmanthus ‘Heaven Scent’, a really tough plant with deep greens smothered in fragrant white flowers at this minute.
•    Witchhazel, Hammellis mollis, a shrub with spidery yellow flowers on bare branches with a haunting fragrance. A plant that was once quite popular and is now hard to find in nurseries unfortunately.
•    Boronia, a fabulous Australian fragrance, many of the varieties have a fragrance for the leaf and flowers.
•    Philotheca myoporoides, formerly Eriostemon (Wax plant), fantastic clusters of pink. White flowers with lemon fragrant foliage.
