Bills too high? Easy, 'shop around'
Victorians, angry about increasing power bills, are being urged by the state government to "shop around" for a good deal.
The volume of complaints to the Energy Ombudsman has risen by 30 per cent in the past six months.
Energy Minister Peter Batchelor says savings can be made by finding the cheaper deals on offer.
Well, is this true? Has anyone actually found a half-decent deal? Share it please if so.
They're laughing at us!
The man representing the energy suppliers in Australia found a few things funny enough to laugh at as people flooded Neil Mitchell's talkback lines with complaints over abnormal price rises.

Energy to power a desalination plant is huge no one was jumping up and down when John Brumby put desal on the menu back in 2007. Its a shame the people of victoria only wake up when its to late

Neil, I have just received my Origin Power Bill and noticed that on the last bill which was over $700.00's usually in low $400's, there was a charge for Credit Card payment. On asking today I ascertained that they are now charging .06% of the total bill for credit card payment. The meter charge which is new as of last account, I could not get a straight answer as to how much, but she said it was being charged for 4 years (a government charge). I also noticed that there was no read (what you have used) on this bill. No, they are not putting that now, so you don't know how much you have used!!! She also said that they are reading the meter's from a depot not going to come on your property to read the meter. Bye the way, I have had a smart meter for the past 4 years!!! For the first year they could not even get a proper read, their probe that they read them with would not work!!! A complete rip off all around.

What cut of the smart meter profits does the govenment get? Bills don't just increase overnight for no reason. I feel sorry for the elderly who are at home in the cold, not by choice, but by the cost of living these days. Shame on this country.

After privatisation succussive governmentsâ?? led by Jeffâ??s held down prices by regulating the industry for short term political purposes. This forced the electricity companies to neglect upgrading and maintaining their systems as had been the case when the government owned SEC controlled electricity supply and generation. We now have half of our base load generators in the Latrobe Valley working past the end of their design life. Added to this we now have the uncertainty of a carbon pollution tax and its consequences holding back investment in more modern plant. First it was the workers, then the new owners of the generation and supply, now finally the consumers of the electricity (you were waned) know the feeling of being JEFFED.

The State Govt was well aware the electricity retailers were expecting an increase of up to 20% in the amount of power consumed as the old meters understated consumption by this amount.
Why? Simply because they were old.
A smart meter was installed into my house midway through the billing period. The result is after the new meter was installed the consumption increased by a factor of 2.5 times.
When queried, the retailer said go to Jemena the meter owner and pay $200 to get it checked. Otherwise pay the bill.Pat Friday 16 July, 2010 - 4:12 PM
