Department Of Justice attempts to explain the chaos

SEPTEMBER 13, 2010: Ted Baillieu says there's been a cover-up on the accuracy of speed cameras which the Auditor-General should investigate.

The Opposition leader says there have been legitimate concerns from motorists vindicated by government documents showing cameras on EastLink had been detected malfunctioning.

Hundreds of motorists who've been issued with multiple fines at a Wellington Road speed camera have been insisting on this 3AW website blog there was no way there were speeding.

Mr Baillieu told Neil Mitchell the maintenance documents prove the cameras were not working perfectly.

Police Deputy commissioner Ken Lay says while faults can develop in any equipment, offences detected by radar are cross-checked for accuracy with loops in the road before any infringement is recorded.

BACKGROUND: The Neil Mitchell program received hundreds of calls late in 2008 in relation to what motorists believe could be at least one faulty speed camera on Eastlink.

Tests carried out on the cameras aimed to dispel the allegations, but the feedback and complaints continue to flood in via the Eastlink 3AW blog. Do you have your own Eastlink camera story?

  • I'm glad to see I'm not alone on this. I received a fine yesterday for the Wellington Rd underpass, when I know for a fact that I wasn't speeding. I'd love to know how I was supposedly doing 113kmph when I've always done 90kmph under that bridge. It's renown for being inaccurate, so I've never taken the chance of going anywhere near the speed limit. I have no intention of paying it - I'll see them in court.

  • I recieved a fine in the mail alleging I was travelling 109 down to 106 under the Wellington Rd bridge. as t travel twice a week om Eastlink I am aware of the Cameras. I have my 2010 Merc on cruise set at 100KPH, My GPS showing 96-97 KPH. Moreover my GPS warns me of the speed and the fixed camera. There is no way I would be doing such speed. I am so outraged I have emailed Peter Ryan and Vic Roads . I have not had a ticket for 4 years. I will fight this injustice as robustly as I can.
