Terry Jones speaks about deal which may not have been made?

UPDATE: There are now reports US pastor Terry Jones has cancelled his 'Burn A Koran' day.

US President Barack Obama said the 'stunt' could turn into a recruitment bonanza for suicide bombers willing to blow themselves up in cities in the US and Europe.

Jones announced his decision after claiming that he had received assurances that a mosque and Muslim cultural centre planned for a site two blocks from Ground Zero in lower Manhattan would be relocated.

However, there was no immediate confirmation of a deal from Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, who heads the group planning the New York mosque.

Pastor Terry Jones said in a news conference: "He has agreed to move (the mosque). And we have agreed to cancel our event on Saturday. Americans don't want the mosque there and of course Muslims don't want us to burn Korans."

FRIDAY: The US pastor behind a controversial public Koran burning making headlines around the world has said he will reconsider his plans if he receives a phone call from the White House.

Pastor Terry Jones said he would reconsider his protest if President Barack Obama personally spoke to him, the New York Post reported.

"As of right now we are not convinced that backing down is the right thing," Jones told USA Today in an interview.

But he said if the the White House, State Department or Pentagon asked him to cancel his protest "that would cause us to definitely think it over. That's what we're doing now. I don't think a call from them is something we would ignore."

PETER MAHER: Pastor Terry Jones, who is the head of a small Christian church in Gainesville, Florida is about to further increase tensions between Muslim and non Muslim countries.

Pastor Jones is holding an International Burn a Koran Day on September 11 to send a message to al-Qaeda to protest against their bombing of the world Trade Centre in 2001.

Jones and his congregation of about 30 plan to burn 200 copies of the Koran against the wishes of his local community, the White House and also US Commander in Afghanistan General David Petraeus.

This seems to be nothing more than a cheap publicity stunt by some two bob preaching evangelist to attract more like minded people who discriminate against those who practice the Muslim faith.

The fact that his actions could further heighten the danger American and Allied troops face in Afghanistan and Iraq does not seem to deter this fool from wanting to continue with his stunt.

What about if his actions result in renewed attacks against innocent citizens around the world and we have another September 11 on our hands.

At present Hilary Clinton and the Obama Government are desperately attempting to further discussions on peace between Israel and Palestine. Hilary Clinton has condemned his actions but this is not stopping the God Loving Pastor.

How does discriminating against people due to their religious beliefs fit into the Christian Philosophy? I thought the Christian teaching was that all men were equal irrespective of colour, creed or religion.

The American right which is fuelled by the religious belt has to take responsibility for the actions of their members like this fool, Terry Jones.

I wonder what solace his actions will bring to the parents of those military personnel who now be targeted following his protest on Saturday.

For goodness sake when are we ever going to learn that respect will always win out against discrimination?

We can’t stop him though because to do so would deprive him of his freedom speech.

Wonder what we would say if someone was burning 200 bibles in Gainesville, Florida on Saturday.

  • Mohammad was first married at aged 25 to Khadija. The marriage lasted 25 years, until her death. Muhammad is said to have had thirteen wives or concubines. How is it that he is then betrothed to a 6/7 year old child (Aisha) at aged 50, and the marriage was consummated when Aisha was no more than 9/10 years of age, by which stage Mohammad was 53 years of age~! It suddenly explains why children are being forcibly removed from this country and committed to 'arranged' overseas marriages to adult males. Is this the standard of living that this country has been reduced to, just to appease a minority???

  • Patrick, Mohammad/Muhammad allegedly was a prophet who founded Islam. His life, deeds & thoughts have been widely debated by both followers & opponents over many centuries, so a true appraisal of his place in history is extremely difficult. There was obviously major conflict when he tried to forcibly introduce Islam, no different to what is being attempted in this country. George Negus is not the only journo covering Middle eastern politics & events, particularly Iran. There's fanaticism in most religions. I am not saying education is the sole preventive measure against fanaticism or terrorism, because the British rail bombers allegedly were all well educated & high achievers. Iran is a typical Middle Eastern basket case & I am yet to be convinced that nuclear war will not be the final outcome. The Iranian student revolts were very similar to Tiananmen Square, and probably the only thing that prevented a massacre was the ready availability of technology which instantly broadcast the event to the world.

  • Lenny.

On a factual historical point, Mo' never 'returned from the Crusades"...Mo' was dead and buried in late Dark Ages/very early Middle Ages centuries b4 THE Crusades that we call Crusades began.
Man of peace, at any time, give us a break with the sanitized PC "islamic history"..also young people in Iran are young hip and with it, like rock music and jeans?..forget it. All George Negus-level rhetoric. Theyre still fanatical muslims and behind their fruitcake mullah regime to that extent.
The mistake many apologists and pollyannas make is somehow getting the idea that only uneducated muslims from an Afghan/Pakistani muddrassa are devout pious fanatical muslims.
How many contempory Islamic terrorists were tertiary educated/higher professions?
It doesnt come down to education level in this phenomenom--opiate drugs and poisons and mental illnesses affect the 'educated" as well.

  • Save the Qur'an, get rid of the Muslims~! Sam, if you had the slightest knowledge of Mohammad, you would know that he returned from the crusades with every right to wipe out other religions, but CHOSE to live in peace & harmony~! How many virgins if you die a martyr? Absolute rubbish~! TRY reading the entire Qur'an. How many translations have been written by obsessed hateful extremists? Peace & love? Yeah right~! Since when? It is selectively quoted by fundamental extremists to support their own sick perverted beliefs~! The Qur'an is quoted for no other reason than to justify wanton killing & destruction~! Mohammed never mentioned the word 'infidels', because he respected every alternative religion's right to exist~! TRY reading "Prophet of Doom" by Craig Winn & you may get some sense of reality & context~!

  • Immigration, if you intend persisting with some degree of Muslim migration, at least take a good look at young people in Iran. They are progressive, intelligent, 'westernised' well educated individuals who will contribute something decent to this country's growth & prosperity, instead of the usual uneducated ignorant extremist crap that you are presently allowing in from the Middle East~! They want to avoid war, hostility & tyranny at all costs, and live a peaceful harmonious existence. These young people have a lot to offer this country & deserve the opportunity.

  • Burning any book despite its religious meaning is dangerous. Hitler did it!

Muslims think they are Gods favourites, providing they have the same God?
