Carey comes clean to Mitchell

Wayne Carey

Wayne Carey has admitted he came close to taking his own life, desperately trying to escape the pain he had caused family and friends.

The revelations were made during a candid half-hour interview with 3AW's Neil Mitchell, one of Carey's strongest critics, and someone Carey openly admitted he 'hated' during his football career and tragic fall from grace.

Carey spoke of the pain his well-publicised affair with teammate Anthony Stevens' wife Kelli in 2002 and his subsequent departure from the North Melbourne football club (of which he had been a player since he was 16) caused him and his dependence on drugs and alcohol once he had retired from football in 2004 as he battled to come to terms with what his life had become.

He also spoke of his admiration for former wife Sally who he still keeps in regular contact with. When asked whether his daughter Ella would respect him once she was old enough to read of her father's troubled life and the decisions he had made, Carey said that she would respect him as long as he treated her the way a father should treat a daughter.

Asked about his childhood, Carey described the years living under his father as 'abusive' but maintained he still loved his him, even after Kevin Carey described his son as 'an idiot' and 'a liar'. He said he hadn't spoke to his father in 'a few years' and couldn't see them forming a relationship again.

What do you think? Do you believe Wayne Carey has turned over a new lease on life? Ladies, how do you view 'The King' after the revelations made in his book?

  • Everyone should get a second chance... Why should Wayne Carey get one?

  • He needs help and he should get it. Writing a book about it isnt the way. publicising the events in hes past that relate to other people isnt appropriate or fair.

if one wants to cleanse he or herself do it and do it privately and then get on with your life

  • well, I won't buy the book because I don't need to know all the sordid details, but suffice to say i think he really has been transparent here, and of course, this would be the last chance he gets... but just think too, how many times have most people made mistakes, stuffed up and then come clean, only to stuff up again? I honestly don't think the fame is worth the scrutiny..but all the best to you Wayne, hope your daughter grows up to be someone you can be proud of, and will see you for the man (hopefully) you have become, and not the one you once were.

  • I find it hard to imagine Wayne Carey being sincere about anything. It will be interesting to see how he treats his young daughter as she grows up. Let's hope she doesn't run into a pack of drunken footballers and go through some of the stuff her father perpetrated on females in the past.
