What we're talking about

Christine Nixon at Royal Commission

Posted by: 3AW Radio | 14 April, 2010 - 2:23 PM

Former police chief Christine Nixon says she failed to tell the bushfires royal commission that she dined with friends at a pub on Black Saturday because she didn't think it was relevant.

In a heated exchange at the Teague inquiry, Nixon faced another grilling from counsel assisting the commission.

Rachel Doyle, SC, suggested the omission was made because of its potential to cause embarrassment but this was denied by Nixon.

The former top cop was also forced to defend the suggestion her mobile phone was switched off between the hours of 6pm and 9pm on Black Saturday given phone records showed no activity during this period.

Nixon hit back at the hearing, saying the suggestion was 'abhorrent'.

  • For the Rumour File: On the Bushfires/Nixon article...

I haven't heard it mentioned but the Police Operations Centre at the Victoria Police Centre was shut down at around 11pm on the first night of the fires and not re-opened until about 8.00 a.m. The 'prosecutor' at the Royal Commission until recently was wondering why there were no entries in the log between those times. It seems no-one told her they shut the Operations Centre down. True Dinks.

  • That was a very good editorial Neil. Why isn't she accountable for her actions? The government spin would be that this matter should just fade away and to some extent with the Williams death, it will take a back seat fo a while. Nixon represents the short comings of the Labor Government who head hunted her and for any government that believes that the CCP should be sympathetic to the government of the day. CCP's should be selected on their merit, not gender, or political leanings. Ask yourself this, who flew to NSW and interviewed her for the job?; who informed her to resign her ALP membership? What former ALP leader has been the most sympathetic to her? Under whose watch did the BIT's Department have an economic meltdown. The current CCP who was also part of the Executive Leadership Group at the time has accepted the auditors report in regards to the BITS debarcle but was also assisting the helm at the time of the demise of that department. He got the nod yet any other director or manager would have been shown the door.
Accountability you say. Not with this government.

  • Nixon will NEVER be made accountable whilst Brumby is in power, because ultimately it demonstrates his own lack of leadership/transparency, and decision making failures. With his own credibility on the line, he has to protect Nixon.

  • If it costs Victorian taxpayers $55,000 a year to keep a murderer in jail per year, this brutal thug that murdered Williams saved Victorian Taxpayers $1,760,000! I don't condone the killing but I do believe in capital punishment. Williams should have been hung.

  • This arrogant, and cold woman seems to be defiant till the end. When will Brumby make a decision on the people that should be taken away from taxpayer funded jobs i.e Nixon and madden. Brumby make a decision like any other real leader would. Or is there any other reason you are ingoring the voice of the people???
