Monday, June 15: A man killed in a shooting in Melbourne's northern suburbs is believed to be Desmond Tuppence' Moran, a member of the notorious underworld family.

Police said the man was shot on Union Road at Ascot Vale about midday.

A woman who was across the road from the shootings spoke to 3AW's Denis Walter shortly after the apparent assasination.

"I was across the road from where it happened at the post office … I just heard all the gun-shots and I am really angry because there was lots of kids and whatnot going about their business," she told 3AW Afternoons.

"It's a really busy shopping strip. There were people everywhere."

"Everyone knew who it was straight away."

3AW's Yvette Gray said witnesses have told her there were around five shots fired and with no-one as of yet apprehended for their involvement in the shooting, Victoria Police have dispatched helicopters to assist with the man-hunt for what is believed to be two shooters.

Detective Inspector Steve Clark told 3AW Drive at 4:30pm: "There was a man shot at a deli in Union Road Ascot Vale, he was confronted by two men in dark clothing wearing balaclavas and both armed with firearms. He was shot a number of times and those men fled on foot and were then seen driving north in a green vehicle away from Union Road."

"I still have crime experts out at the scene," he added before saying he refused to speculate on whether the daylight shooting could spark another 'gangland war'.

Mr Moran is the brother of Lewis Moran and uncle of Jason and Mark Moran who were killed in Melbourne's underworld war.

The 60-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head, an ambulance spokesman said.

The man was dead at the scene outside a house in Union Road when paramedics arrived.

A witness was treated for shock, the spokesman said.

The location of the shooting is in the vicinity of an attack earlier this year on Mr Moran as he sat in a car in the driveway of his Ascot Vale home.
