Wine blending Rochford-style - Yarra Valley Open for Inspection 2011

The Yarra Valley was “Open for Inspection” on the weekend, with some of the region’s best wineries, restaurants and hotels giving visitors the chance to learn the tricks of the trade from winemakers, chefs, artists and more.  The idea was to take people behind the scenes to experience well-known venues from a different perspective – whether chatting with the curators at TarraWarra Museum, learning how to make paella at Yileena Park, or taking a tractor around the orchard at Rayners Stonefruit. Or, you could have done as I did – and turn your hand to winemaking at Rochford Winery.

Rochford’s event came complete with measuring jugs, funnels, calculators and aprons, as guests (under the guidance of Rochford sales manager John Bright) set about re-creating their own version of the winery’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon – carefully mixing quantities of Cab Sauv, Merlot, and Cab Franc until they had the reference wine duplicated, or as in my case - an even better blend of their own.

Depending on your level of interest in the serious science of winemaking, it was either riotous fun or a fantastic opportunity to have a real go at basic winemaking (for those with more than a passing interest).

And at the end of it all, when we each had our optimal blend, they were carried across to the restaurant to accompany a gorgeous two course lunch from Rochford’s autumn menu. Thankfully some reserve 2005Pinot Noir was also available for those who hadn’t done such a great job at producing a great drop of their own!

Definitely worth looking out for the Open For Inspection program for 2012, or in the meantime get in to try the Chorizo and Manchego Croquettes, or to-die-for slow braised beef ribs on the menu at Rochford each and every day!
