Etihad under seige
Dean Mighell, ETU State Secretary, says the construction of Etihad stadium was controversial and contacted the AFL to warm them of issues with safety at the time.
He said because building works were running behind schedule a 'carpet-type grass' was laid in haste to have the ground ready for round 1 of the AFL season.
Have a listen to the interview with Dean. What are your thoughts on Etihad stadium? Do you think the AFL have a case to answer?
REPORT: The AFL and Etihad Stadium are taking steps to address concerns about the surface at the ground.
Ground staff will add more regular top dressing and aerate the turf to provide players with more traction.
Stadium management will also advise clubs on what type of boots are best used.
AFL Players Association chief Matt Finnis says most players are unimpressed with the surface.

SOLUTION - There are two issues with Etihad. 1). The roof does not open enough to allow the WINTER sun to penetrate the surface and provide enough energy for the turf to grow properly. The sun in winter does not arrive at "high noon" rather, it moves across the skyline not directly above so you are not going to get enough energy from the sun for the turf to grow like it is suppose to. Have you ever seen grass grow under a tree? If it does, it is pretty weak. 2). Stop watering the turf! After every event the ground staff are out there flooding the surface with water. Stay behind after a game and check out how much water they waste on the surface. You need to let the turf roots penetrate deeper. Watering it all the time creates shallow roots which means players can easily tear the surface and slip over.
So stop watering the surface and let the roots penetrate deeper to strengthen them and leave the roof open or get rid of the roof all together.

I find it incredible coincidental that etihad stadium is now deemed dangerous, unfit to play on by the Players Association and the AFL .Where they have both held press conferences the same day that FIFA'S commitee arrive in town to inspect our bid for the world cup.Jeff Kennet on this very radio station has been saying this for months. Though when is an appropiate time to address the issue the same day FIFA is examaning our world cup bid its more than a coincidence. Although Etihad is not an official stadium to host world cup matches. I think we can read between the lines as to what is going on.
