The head of the state Australian Medical Association says it's time get honest with obese people and start using some tough love, and not feel uncomfortable calling them 'fat'.

Dr Harry Hemley says while it wouldn't work with all obese people but some may need some straight-talking from their GP to motivate them to lose weight.

Ross and John asked the question if 'fatty' is more offensive than moridly obese... What do you think? Do you think it's ok to call people fatty?

But this type of approach hasn't been welcomed by all health experts.

Monash University sociologist Dr Samantha Thomas spoke to Justin Smith and Tom Elliott and said humiliating people is not helpful.

  • People have a natural weight and there's nothing they can do about it. If you're fat you're fat and any diet, operation or exercise is only temporary. Naturally skinny people can eat junk food and guzzle down coke without gaining a kg. Natuarly fat people put on a stone every time they look at a lettuce leaf. Sad but true.

  • Tough loving doesn't always work. That can be just more repetitive hurtful words & verbal abuse. Sometimes 'reality therapy' can work, provided it's done properly at the right time. I had a friend who was a chain-smoking 'alcoholic' who was really unwell through his cigarette & alcohol abuse. I confronted him at work & told him straight up he looked like death warmed up. I also told him - if he continued living his current lifestyle, to save time & go down & book in for his funeral~! He got the message & instantly gave away the alcohol & the cigarettes. With obesity, you need to positively motivate people to lose weight - sell them the benefits of looking great in any clothing, being able to wear anything, breathing better, competitive/fun social activities (focus on enjoyment/participation/group activities), gentle exercise to begin with, less asthma & less risk of heart disease or diabetes. Sell them on the benefits of looking & feeling great. DON'T ever call them fat. You may be their last open line of contact with the outside world. Do want to motivate them, or send them into deeper depression? First rule of any diet - DON'T DRINK COKE PERIOD~!
