3AW NEWS SNIPPETS 8:30AM (Listen Live to 3AW):

- Residents in an estate on the outskirts of Shepparton could be stranded for up to three days after flood waters rose overnight.

The Goulburn River peaked at 11.1 metres and is expected to remain at that height until midday.

- At Wangaratta authorities were still watching the swollen Ovens and King Rivers. Floodwaters there are beginning to recede but concerns remain for the Wilson Road levees (about 60 homes are threatened if they fail).

The city's declared emergency area has been lifted but access remains limited to only residents.

- At Horsham the Wimmera River is expected to peak this morning.

The SES is working to protect 20 homes at risk.

- The state's floods are likely to see more mosquitoes over the spring and summer and a heightened risk of Ross River fever. People are being warned to stay out of floodwaters becuase of the risk of disease.

Scott Hilditch from the SES say there's contamination from debris, chemicals and sewerage seeping into the rivers from overflowing sewerage systems.

- Dean Zabrisak from VicRoads is warning there are scores of road closures around the state.

  • I'm interested to hear that the emergency text messaging has been happening. I live 300m from the Goulburn River in Shep and have not received any texts. I'm keeping an eye out my window, but I'm not even mildly concerned at this point.

I lived in Whittlesea during Black Saturday and received the text messages which went out some week/months (?) after that when there was a fresh fire threat.

The text service is a great idea, but I hope it's never relied on as a sole source of information.
