Funerals should not be celebrations
Father Bob has shared his own views on the guidelines for Catholic funerals, sent by Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart, which indicate funerals should not be celebrations.
"Secular items are never to be sung or played at a Catholic funeral, such as romantic ballads, pop or rock music, political songs, football club songs," an excerpt from the guidelines says.
The Catholic church today says it hasn't changed it's position on procedures at funeral services and is standing by its ruling they should not be a celebration of the deceased's life.
"The focus of a Christian Funeral is our Loving God in whom we believe and the eternal life he promises," said a statement today from Bishop Tomlinson.
"The main focus of a funeral service is on the deceased person's response to God and the faith community's commending the deceased person to God for his/her goodness, that they may be rewarded with eternal life with God."
"We take great comfort in the good evident in a person's life and their achievements, their interests and passions. This is about time and place and our Christian Faith. The deceased's life, reminiscences of the events of the deceased persons's life, hobbies or football interests are more appropriate for a wake or informal family gathering outside of the funeral."
Listen to Father Bob on 3AW Breakfast and Neil Mitchell's editorial, where he reveals what song he wants played at his own funeral.

I guess if the Catholic church does not want to honor the last wishes of a deceased parishoner, who would generally.urch plan their funeral in advance. The Church should also not take any legacies that may be left by such persons to the church

A loving God is not distinct from humanity. The Church just wants to have complete control of those in the congregation, from birth until death. Funerals should be celebrations of the person's life. It is basically for those left behind, to remember their loved ones. Why should the Church steal this away to be replaced with ritual and formalities? I'm glad I'm a Protestant!

The last possible person to ever get a Footy Song at their funeral on 26th August 2010 was My mother (Dulcie O'Riley). She was married at St Peter and Pauls in 1936 and at her funeral at 93 years of age, she had been a South Melbourne icon and a fully paid member of the Swans till the day she died - Father Bob sent her out with a song that encapsulated her love of life. It was what she wanted.
We appreciate what Father Bob did for us - we are so very grateful. He is a priest of the people and knew how much it meant to us. We had a full requiem mass as Dulcie would have expected and I promised my mum that she would go out on that footy song all her life. People came to celebrate what was her life.
Does the Arch Bishop want us all to have our funerals at parlours? because he's pushing us all out of the Church...

The people who make these decisions, are the same people who totally Ignored the rampant amounts of pedophiles in the Churches. Shame Shame Shame.
