They're laughing at us!

The man representing the energy suppliers in Australia found a few things funny enough to laugh at as people flooded Neil Mitchell's talkback lines with complaints over abnormal price rises. Listen to that interview by clicking the headline above.

  • My bill doesn't seem much to some, but when you are on a low income, and trying to study to get a job, finding $257 dollars for a months electricity out of the $200 left after I've paid my rent is a toss up whether I eat or not have electricity. These greedy companies are charging for electricity like petrol companies do, except its not a holiday.

  • Just thought I would add my story. It is pretty similar to everyone elses. My husband and I just received our electricity bill it was $589, our previous bill was nearly $200. The cost of the unit of elctricity remains the same, this bill and the last bill state that the were read readings. We haven't increased our usage greatly, our prvious winters usage was around the $200 mark as well. My husband and I are completely stunned, we even started to think maybe our neighbours were stealing our electricity. However my husband and I recall a number of weeks ago on your show that this was an issue for many others out there. I just don't get it, it would make sense if we had bought 5 LCD TV and had them on for hours, but we both work 9-5 Mon-Fri and we have most of our appliances on gas. I could understand it if the rate had gone up but it hasn't, I am at a loss to why there has been an increase in use nearly 3x the amount!

  • i had to do a double take this morning. Was that our dear leader of the 90's on your program this morning, wailing about power/water prices and how people on fixed income will suffer?
    Now that is satire!

  • Hi Neil, great program!
Just a quick comment about these bills. Just received my water bill re my apartment and i just about fell over backwards! The difference between my previous bill and my recent bill was about a hundred and twenty dollars . I immediately rang south eastern water and apparently as of the 1st of July this year, it has gone up by 20%.
God help us....where is this all going
