REPORT: Refugee advocates have expressed anger at Prime Minister Julia Gillard's call for Australians to say what they feel about asylum seekers.

Federal Cabinet meets today to discuss the government's approach to the issue and a decision will be made later this week on whether to resume processing asylum-seekers from Sri Lanka.

Refugee groups say the Prime Minister's call will only give headlines to the most extreme views.

Sustainable Population Minister Tony Burke says there has to be a full public discussion on the issue.

Here's some of the emails sent to nmitchell@3aw.com.au today:

Hello Neil,

How about looking after our own people in Australia first. Our Aged, our Pensioners, our Homeless, Our Sick and infirmed. These people are coming here and using up our Services and Infrastructure which our own people cannot get access to. And what about the lack of Health Checks and Security Checks. What diseases and Security risks are these people bringing with them. How well are they being vetted.

Regards,

Owen

Ask Julian Burnside how many Asylum seekers seek asylum in a country that doesn't have a welfare system.

Regards,

Alf

When these so called “refugees” come to Australia they have been able to afford their airfare to Indonesia, purchase a place on a boat with a people smuggler, and then when they get here they are given board and lodging by our Government until their legitimacy is established.  They are then given money, free medical, housing assistance, etc. that then enables them to pay back whoever loaned them the money in their own country so that the next person can come over in the same manner.

We don’t look after our own people in this manner!

Maybe we should deny them the all above aid and therefore they would not be able to repay their debt back in their own country.

See if this would slow down the numbers!

Jen

Neil,

The Government should invoke a law providing for mandatory life imprisonment WITHOUT parole for the people smugglers then see how many boats come.

Michael

  • PS: I object to the way they come over here and when they finally get in, they don't want to assimilate.

  • asylum seekers are neither "illegal" nor are they "immigrants". They have a right to seek asylum in Australia, no matter how they arrive. also, an immigrant can leave and return to their country at any time they wish, a asylum seeker cannot for fear of persecution. This often means them and their families are tortured, imprisoned and even executed by their own government! also, there isn't actually a queue for people/s seeking asylum. I feel for them, but I also can see where everyone else is comming from

  • Alright so allot of people are complaing about asylum seekers coming here, but whats the big deal, yes they take up some space and some of our money but the countries they come from cannot provide them with the necessities needed. Shelter, food, water and safety. That's what they want and need and we can provide them with that. Some people need to stop being so selfish and think of others.

  • Jenna and Kahlia, you pair of dopey dills.
Do you think other countries would take in thousands of Australians if we decided to
    run away to another country?
These migrants who run to live here are critical of us and our way of life, YET cannot wait to receive their Centrelink payments.

Never critise what this wonderful country does - wait until you both have matured a little more and then you will be able to rationalise Australia's decisions. We do not want to end up like the countries these people have run away from - we have to protect ourselves from over population.

  • To the students who are doing projects on this issue, I think you are being given misinformation, Australia happily takes in genuine legal refugees, what we are discussing are the antics of ILLEGAL BOAT PEOPLE â?? who destroy their documents/papers, why do they do this if they are genuine refugees??
These people are taking up the spaces of real refugees who wait their turn in awful conditions in camps in their home nations and keep getting pushed to the back as a result of the ILLEGAL BOAT PEOPLE, these illegal boat people seem to have the financial resourses to pay a great deal to people smugglers to pass through other safe nations who could offer assistance and safety, but choose to come to Australia illegally, we Australians who feel this is because Australia has an outrageously generous financial benefits to these people and it is wrong to take, when we have genuine refugees & our hard working tax payers who do not receive these luxuries, do you realize just how many benefits these people are getting when our own elderly citizens do not receive any thing near these benefits?? That Australians are paying for these illegalâ??s, maybe when you have actually worked for sometime & paid high taxes, instead of living in LaLa Land where your parents are funding your lifestyle, you might reconsider you opinions too
