Insurance companies under siege
ABOVE: Neil Mitchell discusses with talkback callers the storm damage around Melbourne and the way insurance companies are responding to people's concerns.
RACV claims manager John Simpson told 3AW today (listen to his interview in full below):
- All resources available working to deal with claims
- Cars with hail damage will be covered by comprehensive policies
- The RACV is defining the storm as an official 'flood'
- The severity of this event is quite unique and the worst hit areas are around Rowville and Lysterfield
- People driving in deep water whose vehicles then sustain damage will be covered by comprehensive policies
- There has been around 10,000 claims to RACV so far, which is around a 'month's work in about 24 hours
- RACV does not believe insurance premiums will not rise significantly as a result of the storm
3AW would like to get your feedback below on how you have been treated by insurers in the wake of the storm on Saturday.

You're right Caz. I thought of the insurance company employees on Monday and was glad it wasn't me. They would have been inundated!

A. Mills, as James rightly pointed out, the rating relates to your claims, not driver errors. The more claim free years you have, the higher your rating, up to rating 1. Making a claim changes your rating. If the difference in premium exceeds the amount of your claims (which it probably won't) don't claim.

I'm starting to feel sorry for the insurance companies and the people who work for them.
People complained about not being able to contact their insurance companies..think about it..they were bombarded. A little patience would help.I think its reasonable if you claim, you lose your rating 1 no matter what the situation. Yes and I would be upset..but that's the way the ball rolls.
Nature is a force to be reckoned with.Caz Wednesday 10 March, 2010 - 9:31 AM -
I have filed a claim with Budget Direct for hail damage to my Honda Accord V6 luxury (2004) caused this last weekend. Budget informs me that I will lose my Rating 1 if I pursue this claim. Surely these ratings should be based on driver error or accident rather than an act of nature whilst parked, driverless in a Safeway car park. Whilst I will pursue this is writing with Budget I feel this is an outrageous act by the insurance company.

Liam,
Is that not what the rating one represents? The fact that you've not claimed? Now you have you are not a rating 1. Seems logical to meJames Tuesday 9 March, 2010 - 9:55 PM
