Article by John Silvester, The Age: Crime matriarch Judy Moran is one of three people arrested over the murder of her brother-in-law Desmond 'Tuppence' Moran.

The two others are Jason Moran's sister in law Suzie Kane and he boyfriend Geoff 'Nuts' Amore.

The three were arrested by homicide detectives earlier today.

Police are still hunting the man alleged to be the second gunman in Monday's murder.

The three suspects are expected to appear in court this afternoon.

Police say a 43-year-old man is expected to be charged with one count of murder, while a 64-year-old woman and a 45-year-old woman are expected to be charged with being an accessory to murder. All three are from Ascot Vale.

Desmond Moran was shot dead in his favorite Union Road Coffee shop just before midday on Monday by two gunman.

Shortly after the murder Judy Moran was seen running to the scene crying 'Dessie, Dessie'.

But those close to the Moran clan said Desmond and Judy detested each other.

Desmond blamed her when he was jailed over an incident in court.

Hours after the shooting a source said Judy had been looking for two hitmen out of Sydney about sic months ago.

On March 17 there was an attempt to kill Moran in the driveway of his Langs Road home when a shot was fired at the driver of his car.

The bullet hit the steering wheel - saving the driver's life. Tuppence had been drinking and was sitting in the passenger seat of his Mercedes-Benz.

Article by Ben Wise, 3AW (9AM): The lead detective in the Des Moran murder case has refused to rule out the Melbourne 'Gangland Wars' could be reignited as a result of Monday's broad-daylight assassination of the convicted criminal in Ascot Vale.

Speaking to 3AW on Tuesday, Detective Inspector Steve Clark was quick to point out there was no evidence linking Moran's murder to any previous underworld murder in Melbourne – including those of fellow Morans; Lewis, Jason and Mark – but the police will be investigating whether there are links.

"There's a whole lot of evidence that has come out of the crime scene. There is nothing we have at the moment that links Des Moran’s murder yesterday with any murders that have occurred prior to that," he said.

"Now clearly they're links we need to look at and we will be talking to detectives that have investigated those earlier murders."

Monday was the ninth anniversary of Mark Moran's murder outside his home, with Sly Of The Underworld hinting the timing may be an 'underworld statement'.

After saying he wouldn't describe the murder of Des Moran, apparently carried out by two masked gunman at a delicatessen in front of many people in busy Union Street around midday, as a 'professional hit', Detective Inspector Clark was asked by Nick McCallum whether 'the Gangland Wars have reignited?'.

"There are matters currently before the courts so we have to be really careful with what we say about that … but we couldn't discount that," he told 3AW, before highlighting concerns with how brazen the murder was. "There are a number of witnesses who have seen what's occurred which by its very nature is particularly distressing … we had a number of distressed people down there yesterday."

Detective Inspector Clark refused to comment on whether police protection had been offered to Moran after the March 17 attempt on his life and indicated that while the murder investigation will be carried out by the homicide squad, Victoria Police's gangland squad, Purana, would certainly be utilised.

Earlier, Julie from the Ascot Vale Baker's Delight - two buildings down from the deli where Moran was killed - detailed her experience of Monday's murder.

"We did hear the shots," she said. "I knew straight away what it was. We have a lot of customers in the shop and they came behind the counter ... we were all frightened because we didn't know where the shots came from."

"We saw two fellas run past the shop on the foot-path. They ran so fast we could barely see them but knew they were wearing dark clothing."

"There were five ladies and probably three children (in the bakery)."

Anyone with information about the murder should contact Crime Stoppers.
