The Premier has defended Julia Gillard's dress sense amid calls for her to be provided with a taxpayer funded wardrobe allowance.

An image consultant has told the Herald Sun Ms Gillard, on occasions, resembles a "cheap motel bedspread".

Premier John Brumby says he doesn't get a clothing allowance, adding politicians are paid well enough to be able to cover the cost of clothing.

Shafted! Hinch behind the 'bulls---'

Wayne Swan and Julia Gillard - political backflip? HINCH BLOG: The other breathtaking and brazen thing about today is the way the Gang of Two are almost pretending that they had no say in the original mining tax ... even though only days ago they were bashing the miners. Promising no retreat. Calling the miners ignorant liars. No ... it was all that awful Mr Rudd’s fault."

Blog comments Your Say

  • Cheryl, I would have typed exactly the same thing if Kevin Rudd (or Tony Abbot if he'd got in) dressed the same way as Gillard. It's not about being childish, it's about representing the Government and The Nation in a good light. Image is just as important as policy for a politician and it seems I'm not alone in my feelings - see the other comments below.

  • Please Prime Minister, PLEASE stop dressing like a bogan, especially when you represent us overseas.
I understand that perhaps you don't want to be seen to be "wasting money" but it wouldn't be. It's obvious you are wearing clothes you've had in your wardrobe for sometime and they just aren't appropriate for our Prime Minister. You looked so lovely in the Woman's Weekly photoshoot and the clothes really suited you - this is how you should be dressing. This has nothing to do with being a woman in the job ... you need to represent us better. I'm sorry but you're coming across as Kath in "Kath & Kim". Please think about this. Our Governor General looks great, please speak to the person dressing her!!! This is all said with respect and because I want you to look your best and respresent our country better. You and we deserve it.

  • Maybe she should get Keving Rudd to advise her! I mean he was helping the flood victims wearinf a white shirt and suit pants. Very appropriate!!

  • On Sunday one of the most proudest moments of our Nation took place with the awarding of the Victoria Cross to Corporal Robert Smith. All of the dignitaries wore full military dress with medals. The Governor General was resplendant in a smart outfit and stunning hat with all her medals. All the civilian men in classic suit and tie befitting the occaision. Then comes Julia in a dowdy pants suit and blouse.Who is advising the Prime Minister? She really looked like she was going for the pensioner lunch special at the local RSL. She let herself down and ,Friends, she let us down.

  • I keep reading that women respect Julia Gillard. Sorry, I do not. Now, I know that her dress sense has nothing to do with her ability to run the country.... or does it? It is not all about clothing allowance either, a lot of it is about just plain bad taste. PLEASE JULIA, if you are going to represent us overseas, give up the big black and white stripes and dots. For a start it strikes me that she should not wear black or white near her face. She would look so much better in cream instead of white and in browns instead of black. Rustic brown, olive greens, gorgeous burgundy reds and there are many other combinations that would make her look smart and stunning. My god, what a waste! The woman is being beamed all over the world and she can't even be bothered to learn what would make her look good. As you can guess, I did not vote for Julia. I am not ashamed to admit that I was influenced by her lack of dress sense as it made me realise that I had could not relate to her. All this despite the fact that I too am childless and an atheist and a woman and I would so love a woman PM but not this one!
