UPDATE: Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott have both backed the ALP.

Windsor based his decision mainly on the Labor Party's National Broadband Network policy.

Their decisions mean Labor can form a minority government in Australia with Julia Gillard as Prime Minister.

3AW NEWS SNIPPETS:

- Ms Gillard will today meet with the Governor General to confirm she has the support of 76 votes in the House of Representatives.

- Ms Gillard confirmed the next round of health and education funding will be focused on regional Australia.

Labor made the commitment in a bid to win over the three country independents who had to decide which party to support to form a government.

- Ms Gillard says the election result and the following discussions proves democracy works.

- Ms Gillard says former prime minister Kevin Rudd would be offered a senior portfolio but she declined to say if he would get foreign affairs.

- Ms Gillard says she spoke with Tony Abbott shortly after the independents announced their decisions.

- Ms Gillard says the message from voters has clearly been; that all sides of politics must find more common ground.

- Mr Abbott says he will run for the Liberal leadership this week.

- Mr Abbott says given the election result the Coalition will  be a formidable opposition.

EARLIER: Julia Gillard will most likely remain the Prime Minister of Australia after country MP Bob Katter backed the Coalition this afternoon, citing disagreement with Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor in his announcement.

This most likely means the latter two will back the ALP and give Gillard's party the magic number of 76 seats to form a minority government.

Windsor and Oakeshott could still decide to back the Coalition, which would mean Tony Abbott becomes Prime Minister.

The independents have indicated previously they would prefer Australia not head back to the polls, meaning it is not that probable Oakeshott and Windsor would split and thus make it 75 seats all.

  • The one piece of recent news that seems to have slipped under the radar is the proposed Chinese? construction of a 500km rail link in South Africa, for the purposes of transporting iron ore & other mining commodities. Obviously I don't know the volumes, but surely this would have to affect the future market price & volumes of our own mineral exports, as well as our own long term security & prosperity?

  • So i gather the Liberal/Nats did not offer anything to the indepedants to sway their vote and if they had got it they would have called for and election as they believe it is not a true Govt. elected by the people? Yep, didn't think so. Poor losers, AGAIN.

  • Typical Liberal Party CRAP~! I LOVE the convenient memories~! People exercised their democratic right to vote for any candidate or party, regardless of whether it was the Independents, Greens or Labor. Preferences were decided well before the election. People had a choice to vote for The Rabbit's party, and personally elected NOT to do so~! The Rabbit's budget had more holes in it than Swiss Cheese, to the tune of 11 BILLION DOLLARS~! He deliberately misled & lied to the country, knowing full well that his party's costings were a complete sham~! He used every excuse & opportunity to deny independent analysis of his budget costings, UNTIL he was forced into conceding independent access to both Treasury & the Independents~! The problem for The Rabbit was that he got caught & his credibility evaporated in seconds~! END OF STORY~! Obviously 3AW suffers from 'convenient' amnesia when it comes to reporting factual details about The Rabbit or their beloved Liberal Party~! The difference between this government & anything The Rabbit would have delivered, is that FINALLY we will have some degree of Independent transparency, instead of the usual two-party secretive facade that caters for their own self interests~! There is MORE to government than protecting existing company profits & mining interests, particularly when the bulk of the mining profits benefits overseas entities~!

  • We had two Independents deciding.
The first one says "For what it's worth, my vote goes to Labor". For what it's worth?
The 2nd tells us about his kids are split, this is a juicy and sexy decision and that it's going to be ugly..but beautiful in its ugliness.
No wonder the National party got rid of these imbeciles. Good luck Julia. You already have Swan, Garrett and others to hold up..Let alone Bandt, Wilkie and the other 2 imbiciles.

  • My gripe is not about who gets what, so long as people in OZ benefit and I am pleased it appears the bush will get a good share. I am really dissapointed and cannot agree though with the government of our country coming down to 5 men, all who have an axe to grind or vested interests in what side to back. They already voted in their own electorate so how dare they get not just another vote but the final one! Millions voted yet it comes down to them. The final 2 votes put the nail in the coffin of course but it was the whole 5 with their axe to grind that took the rights of millions away. We need to go back to the polls.
