Kevin Rudd

KEVIN RUDD STATEMENT: "Last Thursday, in my farewell press conference as Prime Minister, I said that I would re-contest the next election.

I also said I would be prepared to serve the Government in an appropriate way in the future and that I would do so in the interests of the Government and the country.

I have indicated to the Prime Minister in subsequent discussions that this remains my position.

Ultimately, decisions on Cabinet appointments are a matter for the Prime Minister. I respect that.

For the immediate future, my family and I have decided to take a break. Following that, I will be working in my own electorate of Griffith and in any other way deemed appropriate to support the re-election of the Government."

EARLIER: Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced her new Cabinet line-up today and has left ousted Kevin Rudd out of her new team.

Ms Gillard, however, said she would be ''absolutely delighted'' to have Mr Rudd as a senior Cabinet minister if Labor is re-elected.

In the small reshuffle, Simon Crean takes on education, employment and workplace relations and social inclusion while Foreign Minister Stephen Smith will also take on the trade portfolio.

Lindsay Tanner, who announced he was leaving politics, will remain Finance Minister until election day.

Laurie Oakes told 3AW's Neil Mitchell earlier today he expects Australia will be called to the polls in August.

  • Not a winning cabinet with Conroy, GArrett and Wong still in the line up. Wasteful and idle incompetants will not win votes. The batts are still smouldering....
