Lovett charged with rape - report
St Kilda's Andrew Lovett has been charged with one count of rape.
The St Kilda Football Club released a statement shortly after news broke on Monday afternoon saying :"St Kilda Football Club has today been informed that Saints player, Andrew Lovett, has been charged by Victoria Police with one count of rape."
"The club is currently considering its position in light of these recent developments and the charges brought against its recent recruit, Andrew Lovett."
"At this current time the club is not in a position to make any further comment. The club will update the media with relevant developments in due course. "
The Saints suspended Lovett indefinitely late last year amid allegations he was involved in what a woman is saying was a serious sexual assault against her in Port Melbourne in December.
She was treated by paramedics after the alleged attack.
Lovett is due to front court on Friday.
Shortly after the 3AW Breakfast Rumour File broke the story last year, St Kilda said: "At this time, the club has suspended Andrew Lovett indefinitely."
"Andrew will not be involved with the club in any shape or form until a further decision is made. We are informed that when Victoria Police have completed their investigation, they will decide whether or not he will be charged."
"Victoria Police have confirmed that there is no suggestion of improper conduct of any other Saints players."
Lovett's management team has recently been investigating whether the Saints had acted inappropriately in suspending him.
The Saints said recently they met with Lovett's management team which 'was pursuant to provisions within the AFL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which provides for a Grievance Procedure'.
St Kilda maintained at all times it complied with its obligations under the CBA.
