Matthew Knights sacked by Essendon

UPDATE: Essendon Chairman David Evans has now confirmed 3AW's earlier report Matthew Knights had been sacked by the club, almost two hours after Caroline Wilson broke the news.

Evans said the decision to axe Knights was based on the Bombers' disappointing result in 2010 (14th position on the ladder) and added Knights was 'bitterly disappointed'.

The Bombers have not thrown up any specific names to replace Knights, but favourite son James Hird ruled himself out of contention on Fox Sports shortly after the announcement.

EARLIER: Essendon coach Matthew Knights has been sacked.

The coach of the past three years was told shortly after 1pm today that his time at the club was finished in a meeting with Bombers chairman David Evans.

Knights and his manager Daniel Richardson met Evans earlier this afternoon and it is understood the decision came after an 8am board meeting.

Essendon now faces a two-year payout which could reach $800,000.

Caroline Wilson understands the club faced a spill of the board from influential coterie and other supporters and members should Knights be retained.
