Melbourne's $18 million bike plan
There could be a dramatic increase in the number of cyclists on Melbourne CBD roads with reports new bicycle commuter routes and the inclusion of special lanes in all large-scale road projects will be introduced.
In the strategy, now to be launched next month, $18 million a year will be spent over the next six years.
Bicycle Victoria CEO Harry Barber discussed the plan with 3AW's Neil Mitchell - listen above.
Do you support $18 million of tax-payer funds being used on the project?

The problem is not with new roads, rather the existing urban streets, roads and highways. They are built around cars, and unless the mentality of people coming into companies like VicRoads is changed, adding bike paths will always be put into the "too hard" basket.
I find arterial roads are unrideable and the biggest detractor. North Road, Ferntree Gully Road, Centre Road, Warrigal Road, they're all ridiculous. How am I supposed to get somewhere if I have to avoid every major road.
I get it... North Road has 2 lanes each way for a long stretch, and hundreds of cars. Theres simply no space for a bike path. So rip up the sidewalk or something. Reduce it to one lane of traffic. In drastic times there should come drastic measures. You can only change the status quo by challenging it.

I wouldn't mind paying a basic registration fee for my bike if it meant there were bike paths and lanes on the streets I ride on. Some are full wide lanes, others are 60cm of spare bitumen with a bike picture slapped on as an afterthought. 60cm isn't much when a semi trailer goes past you even at 60km/h.
