REPORT: Thousands of postal and absentee votes are still to be counted following the weekend's extraordinary federal election that looks set to deliver the nation's first hung parliament in 70 years.
Many are tipping the coalition to win 73 seats and Labor to win 72, but whichever party forms government needs 76 seats in the lower house.
Monash University political expert Nic Economou says minority governments can provide stability but it's still not clear who would hold the balance of power.
Independents Rob Oakshott and Tony Windsor say, should negotiations fail to deliver stable government, there should be another election.

The independents Bob Katter, Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor.

SUNDAY: Three independent MPs who are likely to hold the balance of power in a hung parliament held a telephone hook-up this morning to discuss who they believe will best be able to deliver a stable government.
Confused? The 'result' explained
Campaign 2010 has turned out to be the most dramatic and historic in more than years with Australia set to have a minority Government led by Tony Abbott with the support of three independents, all of whom were once members of the National Party.
The story so far...
VIDEO: How did Australia get to the point where it's more than likely we'll have a hung parliament? Perhaps no-one pains the picture better than a Taiwan-based animation company. This is hilarious! Watch the video by clicking the image on the right.

How can the independents trust Julia Gillard? They should speak to Kevin Rudd before they decide to go with Labor. Also will she retain the leadership?

Mandy, 100% agree~! FINALLY we have people power in Parliament, and not just SELF INTEREST GROUPS~! Liberals just don't get it - we are NOT buying your crap~! Finally we have some degree of public representation in office. What a pleasant change~! GO THE GREENS~!

It may amaze you to know that not all a the green votes were protest votes.
Neil Mitchell is always demanding that he is not treated like an idiot by politicians but is quite happy to ridicule perfectly intelligent people because they choose to vote for a party that is up front and quite clear about what they want for Australia.Mandy Monday 23 August, 2010 - 11:38 AM -
NO, to another Election, the people have spoken, and if some of you people who wanted your party to win,,, Stiff S--T

No way should either of the major parties deal with this riff raff. Jeff Kennett took the high moral ground even though it meant the liberals in Victoria were in the wilderness for over a decade. Julia and Tony should do the same. Call another election.

I agree with oakeshott we have a great opportunity for true democracy.
Lets hope we dont blow it.Lets get Parliament really working for the best interests of the country.
The major parties and the greens need to focus on a better australia not on their self interests of control of the country. The Australian people have spoken.theki Monday 23 August, 2010 - 9:46 AM
