Mother didn't killer her boys

PLAYING NOW: Loretta Johns in the studio with Derryn Hinch in relation to the sad case of two young boys who have been killed, probably by slow-leaking gas.

REPORT: The 29-year-old Mooroopna mum whose boys, 7 and 9, were found dead in their bedroom on Sunday has been cleared of killing them, despite police having not formally interrogated her.

Homicide detectives have revealed tests conducted today by an Energy Safe Victoria inspector confirm the deaths were likely caused by a faulty appliance, possibly a heater.

In a statement, Victoria Police says further testing is still to be conducted as part of the investigation and the results of toxicology reports will also be analysed.

The children had no visible signs of injury when officers were called to the Mooroopna house and made the grizzly discovery on Sunday.

The young boys' mother was taken into custody and 'appeared to be disoriented' after which her condition 'rapidly declined', prompting police to have her airlifted to a Melbourne hospital where she has been receiving treatment under guard since.

Detective Inspector Bernie Edwards said on Wednesday the deaths of the two young boys are a tragedy, with the welfare of the mother and family remaining a key priority.

"This is a tragic set of circumstances and the family has been offered counselling and support," he said. "Investigators have not yet been able to formally speak with the mother of the boys however testing carried out at the Mooroopna property has ruled out any involvement by her in their deaths."

"It is normal practice in an investigation into an incident such as this that police would speak with the person who had custody of the children, or anyone located in the premises. The investigation is still ongoing at this stage and police will await the outcome of further testing to assist the Coroner in determining the exact cause of death."

  • This girl is my daughter, and how she has bben treated by the police, the media and the community is nothing short of criminal.I feel ashamed to be living in Mooroopna. Shame on all of you. We have been to hell and back and yet no apology had ever been given. The police had her under police guard, work it out. I would not trust any one again. Of course the police blamed her.. Get the facts right....... You can only lie so much....

  • It seemed the media inferred
the children were murdered by their mother. Trial by media.
    It's shocking sensationalism
    on the medias part.

  • There is nothing wrong with the language used only how people interpret it. The Mother was taken into custody and was under police gaurd, until the facts surrounding the death could be established period. At no time did the police make any statment suggesting the mother killed her children nor did they make a statment contrary until they had investigated and could back their findings in cold fact... Thats the role and charateristics of a professional unbiased police force.

  • The police definitely tainted my view of what happened. "Taken into custody" and "under police guard" are highly prejudicial statements. Someone should definitely lose their job over this.

  • I think it's because we've had to put up with several murder suicides with a parent killing their children.
