Neil Mitchell investigated by ACMA

Neil Mitchell

3AW's Neil Mitchell told listeners on Thursday he is being investigated by the Australian Commercial Broadcasting authority - or the 'radio police', as he describes the body.

It appears someone has complained to ACMA that Mitchell must be 'on the take' from the Australian Labor Party.

The claim is, essentially, that Mitchell is being paid by the Rudd Government to make favourable comments about the ALP.

For the record, these are Mitchell's commercial agreements:

HERALD SUN:

Parties to the agreement: Neil Mitchell and the Herald Sun
Presenter's obligations: Journalist for the Herald Sun
Party providing the benefit: Herald Sun
Consideration: More than $10,000 but not more than $100,000 per annum

CHANNEL SEVEN:

Date of the agreement: 01-01-10
Parties to the agreement: Neil Mitchell and Channel Seven
Presenter's obligations: TV appearances on the Sunrise program
Party providing the benefit: Channel Seven Network
Consideration: More than $10,000 but not more than $100,000 per annum

  • Beautiful spin by Neil Mitchell here. I'm sure he has been complained about to the ACMA re Liberal Party bias plenty of times, but doesn't mention these. If ACMA receive a complaint they must investigate it, so saying he is being investigated for Labor bias is just spin. Compare the anger and aggression he shows towards Rudd, Gillard and anyone from the unions (except the Police Union and the AMA)with the cosy fireside chats he had with John Howard and any other Liberal for that matter.
Yes, he is biased, but don't let his spin muddy the waters.

  • Listening to Neil Mitchell, he is by nature much more closely aligned with the Liberal Party than Labor.

That he refuses to allow that to stop him asking the hard questions of that party is to his credit.
On balance though, he seems to ask the Labor Party a lot more "hard questions". Whether that is warranted or not is open to interpretation, but it is clear that the accusation of "being on the take" is rediculous.

  • Neil Mitchell delivers the tough questions to EVERYONE, regardless of party affiliation! Anyone who says otherwise obviously doesn't listen to his show! Keep up the good work Neil!

  • I do not believe for one minute that Neil is on the payroll of the Labour Party.

I believe he definitely leans towards the Liberal Party but I do not believe he is on the take at all.

I think he does his best to discuss the issues in an unbiased manner. Naturally like Eddie commentating on Collingwood games sometimes that bias is obvious. Generally he does a good job.

  • My advice to Neil Mitchell is to be completely honest about his dealings in and out of 3AW. If he has nothing to hide, then full disclosure is called for. Remember Neil, the integrity of 3AW is at stake, not just your integrity. Co-operate to the fullest.
