Neil Mitchell: Road Safety Ambassador
3AW Mornings host Neil Mitchell has been appointed a Road Safety Ambassador by the Federal Government.
Neil joins other ambassadorial appointees David Wirrpanda (ex-AFL star), Wayne Gardner (champion 500cc motorbike rider), Lindsay Fox (trucking magnate) and Mel Doyle (Sunrise host) on an issue which has touched most Australians.
3AW Mornings invites you to add your ideas below to improve the safety of those driving on Australian roads.
Neil is a strong believer in improving driver education. What is your 'most important' idea?
These may be read on air.
PLAYING NOW: Neil Mitchell's editorial on January 17, 2010.

1. More traffic police please. Speed cameras don't detect drunks, mobile phone users or tailgating.
2. If speed is the main cause of accidents, then anyone detected driving 20 kms over the limit should lose their licence for 6 months. If anyone can justify exceeding the limit by 20 I'd be surprised. You need a deterrent and fines don't deter young motorists from speeding, but losing their licence does. My 2 cents.Zane Tuesday 15 February, 2011 - 11:28 AM -
people on p plates should complete a driving test at the start of every year that they are on their p plates gets any bad habits out of them.

All large trucks should have a GPS tracker installed that records the trucks movements like a black box in a plane. A truck drivers licence should have a chip in it and need to be inserted into the GPS trackers so it records who is driving. RTA or the relevant authority could track live in real time how long, how far, how fast a truck travels and who is driving it.

what we need is a pro-active police presence,
i would like to ask the relevant traffic commander (who ever he is this week)
to show the stats on police detected offenses
i am willing to bet that speeding is the highest detected offence
where in the stats do these following offenses fall failing to indicate
failing to keep left
protruding limbs
failing to give way at a roundabout
and failing to merge correctly
it is not only the general motoring community failing to follow the above mentioned offenses but our own local divvy van

I would like to argue that slow driving on highways can be just as dangerous as driving too fast. Twice each day I drive 10km each way on the Nepean Highway. I frequently find that I am unable to go faster then 60km/h, sometimes even less because a driver in front of me wishes to drive at that speed. This creates frustration and causes those drivers who want to travel faster to weave in and out of the traffic. I have witnessed two collisions and several very near misses as a result. Those people who wish to drive well below the speed limit should stick to the inside lane leaving a lane free for the people who wish to drive faster.
