UPDATE: Actor Matthew Newton is being held in a pyschiatric facility after attacking his former girlfriend.

Rachel Taylor suffered head injuries in the assault, in a Rome hotel lobby, and is now reportedly seeking a restraining order against Newton.

It was intially thought Newton was battling drugs and alcohol issues, however entertainment reporter Peter Ford says he's  being treated for pyschiatric problems.

EARLIER: Matthew Newton's 'TV career is finished' says Neil Mitchell.

Neil believes that Newton may go on to star in movies but television is 'too personal' a medium for him to ever be involved in again.

But a campaigner against domestic violence says dumped X Factor host Matthew Newton could find some redemption if he apologised.

Newton has returned to rehab after being dropped as host by Channel Seven amid allegations of assault against his ex-girlfriend.

Newton has previously had a conviction quashed after an assault charge involving another former girlfriend.

Campaigner Phil Cleary says Newton must show remorse.

Callers to Neil Mitchell had their say on the issue, including one woman who rang up to defend Newton, which sparked a flurry of irate listeners to phone in. Have a listen to the audio via the links above.

  • how many of you watch 2 and a half men?matts got plenty of company dont forget.
Yes matt is a weak selfish man,but dont forget statistically 1 out of 5 oz females have been assaulted by a weak selfish man at some stage in their lives.I hope this dark truth been aired helps other girls leave aggressive boyfriends.
Rachel is lucky in a sense- she couldve died after he punched her& her head hit the marble floor like that.He could be charged with attempted murder.I doubt she'd want the stress of a court case especially now his manipulating sympathy, playing victim -his on suicide watch. She'd have to face him in court.blessings to her and matts family.

  • I agree 100% that violence againsed women or anyone is unacceptable however it does seem apparent that Matthew Newton has serious mental issues that need addressing as well as being accountable for these serious allegations. Before we judge we should realise that firstly this is terrible beyond words for both Brooke & Rachael who have been victims of his abuse but also secondly we should realise that he obviously is a sick man & that too is sad especially for his family. Those who have never sined throw the first stone.

  • Please don't tell me that this thug has a mental illness. It's just a bloody excuse. I haven't heard of him bashing any men and I am sure he has had plenty of chances with his lifestyle. He is simply a weak little man who allegedly gets his kick out of hitting women? Its a power trip and he needs to be brought down to size.

  • Matthew Newton's alleged actions against 2 women now (that we know of), are disgusting and unforgivable. He obviously does not like or respect women. His family, I believe are a lot to blame for the way he has turned out. When he got into trouble for his first violent attack on Brooke Satchwell, all they did was stick up for him, did up until recently nice perfect family shoots for well known magazines, and never showed any public remorse (as their son didn't) for the poor victims here. It is the same this time around. He is obviously a spoilt little brat who has never had any real discipline in his life and been pandered to and had excuses made for him. He got off the first time which was pathetic and I only hope that Rachael Taylor goes ahead with laying charges against this low life scum. Who knows it might help protect someone in the future?
