REPORT: Swimmer Stephanie Rice has apologised after a homophobic slur on Twitter.

Following the Wallabies' last-gasp win over South Africa on Saturday night Rice tweeted, quote "Suck on that faggots!"

But the queen of the pool, who recently withdrew from next month's Commonwealth Games with a shoulder injury, has since apologised and deleted the posting.

FOOTNOTE: We here at 3AW apologise for accidentally using the name 'Ian Stewart' rather than 'Ian Roberts' in two Tweets posted as Ian Roberts' interview with Neil Mitchell was on-air.

Sincere apologies to anyone offended.

  • Unfortunately, the Association of Surfing Professionals also allows their professional athletes to use "gay" in a derogatory way - broadcast around the world so millions of children could see it. This was the second offense after I had already contacted their International Media manager, Dave Prodan, about a similar piece that had run earlier.

  • Society needs full honesty to function at its free-est and best. imagine a polite world where rasicts and bigots are everywhere, hidden from view, but still there. that's what PC gives us.
    full open honest speech lets us see who we like/dislike based on thier open beliefs.
    this is surely better. and no flyboy. i also think people should be allowed to air ANY of thier sexist/racist/etc beliefs in public. all the better for us to see them for who they are. do gay bashers tell everyone thier beliefs before and after beating on gays? or do they hide in the shadows, waiting for the right time to strike?

  • I initially thought "she (Steff) is an idiot ... but if the media stop banging on about it then she can apologise and move on" Didn't really think about it until I heard the 3AW interview with Ian Roberts. I appreciate that Niell may have been trying to be even-handed HOWEVER Ian is perfectly right in all his points and Neill was being childish in repeating the word once he knew how offensive his guest found it and told him how offensive it was to many other. AND Neill - idiot rappers might use the word nigger: I personally find it extremely offensive and can still remember when it was used to do nothing but vilify. Whilst ever there are people existing who "mind" then there is no need to trot out either word when there are alternatives...... And as for Jaguar? ... good on them - even if they don't have gay employees or managers on staff then at least they realise that this is unacceptable behaviour. In fact they've probably realised that very few of the new generation of athletes are NOT going to stuff up because talented though they may be, they have been given far too much far too easily.
