A pedestrian who was hit and killed by a car after it lost control and veered onto a nature strip in Melbourne's south-east last night was thrown 60 metres by the impact, police say.

The 60-year-old  man  was walking along Frankston-Dandenong Road and Luscombe Avenue at Carrum Downs about 8.10pm last night, when the blue Holden Commodore left the road.

Police believe the car spun around after  losing control, with the man being hit by the rear of the vehicle, throwing him 60 metres away into the front yard of a nearby home.

"Witnesses have indicated that the driver may have been speeding at the time of the crash but that is something we are following up," said a spokesman from the Major Collisions Investigation Unit. Alcohol is also being investigated."

Police said the driver, a 24-year-old man from Bonbeach, was taken to The Alfred hospital by road ambulance with non life threatening injuries.

The incident was the third road death in four hours yesterday afternoon.

A 36-year-old Truganina man died when he lost control of his motorcycle, struck a kerb and slid into a stationary car on Elm Park Drive at Hoppers Crossing, in Melbourne's west, about 5pm yesterday, police said.

The car was waiting to exit a driveway. The man died at the scene.

The car's driver, a 36-year-old Hoppers Crossing woman, was assisting police.

Shortly before 4pm, an elderly man died when his car was crushed by a truck north-west of Melbourne.

The man's car was travelling south on the Calder Freeway between Kyneton and Malmsbury, about 90 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, when it strayed into the path of a truck travelling in the same direction, police said.

The 86-year-old car driver died at the scene and his 84-year-old female passenger was flown to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne with serious injuries.

The truck driver, a 44-year-old man from Newstead, near Castlemaine, was taken to Kyneton Hospital with minor injuries and was assisting police.

The deaths take Victoria's annual road toll to 32, one more than at the same time last year.

Three more dead on our roads

  • Retest everyone more often, those that do very silly driving, ban them to drive a moving machine for a long time or life.
point breakers should have the time period at least doubled, from 3 months to 6 months to one year, and unlicensed drivers be never given a licence again as their are many people driving unlicenced or unroadworthy cars if known or not known by the police
they should make it harder to keep a licence if you a old, fragile in health or disabilty and be reassessed to make sure each individual person is capable of driving a car for more than 1 hour.

Some drivers even young healthy ones, after a certain time are not safe drivers even with power naps thats how our bodies are, not used to sit down on one spot
