PLANT OF THE WEEK

Posted by: Jane Edmanson | 9 July, 2010 - 1:13 PM

Saturday 31st July:
'Blushing Bride' Serruria, an attractive shrub, best grown to 1 metre high with fine foliage and creamy white flowers that blush pink. Long flowering, good cut flower for a vase. A member of the protea family and responds well to pruning.

Saturday 24th July:
Correas are wonderful native fuchsias, common name because of their tubular flowers that attract birds for nectar. They are one of the top native plants to grow for their hardiness and range of colours (bright red, C. ‘Dusky Bells, tangerine, white Correa alba) and will grow in many different situations, heavy clay soils, along the coast or in shady parts of the garden. They can be pruned to shape if necessary.

Saturday 17th July:
Aulax Cancellata 'Bronze Haze', one of the plants in the protea family with a lovely bronze foliage, a good one for coastal gardens. www.proteaflora.com.au

Saturday 10th July:
Lotus ‘Bling’

Saturday 3rd of July:
Banksia ‘Cherry Candles’ from Facey’s Nursery

Saturday 26th of June:
Veltheimia bracteate ‘Forest Lily’

  • Dear Jane, Don't know if this is the forum to ask a question of you. If not, please advise and I will redirect to there. I was wanting to find the name/type of tree which has been planted along the Yarra River at Yarra's Edge (on the Marina Side). Do you know the tree or could you suggest how I go about finding out. Thanks.

  • Last week I heard you mention a new type of lawn on the radio and I missed the name of it. I would be interested to know more details please.

  • Jane had a air-conditioner installed before xmas, when it was being installed queried the spot on my balcony(live in flat) where they were positioning it.As it was facing straight onto my Lillypilly trees which I have saved from last year's summer(trimmed them into a hedge)and were coming along wounderfully. NY eve when it was very hot/windy used the conditioner and the ouflow from the conditioner knocked that plus my azalea's for six soaked the azalea in a bucket of water and they have come back O.K. but 1 lost lots of leaves have feed it thrive anthing else to do for them have given the hedge buckets of water and Thrive as these are in the garden just outside my balcony will I loose them what else can I do
Have window boxes hanging on railing and find cockroaches underneath in the drip trays anthing to be done there like a spray just nasty and dont want them in the house
Have a great New Year Jane
