Fevola: The real story

Fevola Drunk LAST YEAR: Neil Mitchell has revealed the real story of what went on during Brownlow Medal night with Brendan Fevola, calling on the full-forward to make a public apology for his actions. Listen to Neil break the news here.

TODAY: Troubled AFL star Brendan Fevola will be not be charged in connection with his booze-fuelled antics at last year's Brownlow Medal ceremony.

There was widespread media speculation that the disgraced Brisbane Lions player - who allegedly exposed himself to a woman at a barbecue on Sunday - would be charged over his exploits at the 2009 Brownlow after-party at Crown.

After last year's Brownlow the AFL investigated accusations of sexual impropriety aimed at Fevola.

However, the Herald Sun journalist allegedly involved decided not to come forward.

Victoria Police said this afternoon there would be no action against Fevola.

‘‘Police have reviewed the situation regarding Brendan Fevola and the incident last September, ‘‘ a police spokeswoman said.

‘‘We can confirm that Victoria Police will be taking no further action in relation to this matter,’’ she said

As the storm of controversy surrounding the disgraced footballer grew this morning, the AFL Players' Association urged the public not to "jump the gun".

Fevola's career is on the brink today after he was suspended indefinitely by the Brisbane Lions over allegations he indecently exposed himself to a mother of four at a football barbecue on Sunday.

The AFLPA's manager of player relations, Ian Prendergast, leapt to Fevola's defence this morning, saying he had "his own version of events".

"These are serious allegations," he said.

"It's also important that we don't jump the gun in terms of Fev's innocence until we have all the information."

Victoria Police today confirmed they intended laying charges against Fevola over his drunken antics at last year's Brownlow Medal presentation night.

Fevola's manager Peter Blucher last night released a statement categorically denying any inappropriate behaviour by Fevola, asking that he not be prejudged and for his privacy to be respected.

  • Oh lord, Fevola's 'shenanigans'are ruining all of our lives and destroying the great game we love...Apparently!

Who here has had their lives affected by Fevola or any other footballer being a dunce? Personally I've got bigger fish to fry!

If he's broken the law, charge him, but until that's been done AND he's found guilty he's done precisely nothing. To take any action at all before this process is completed goes against one of the most basic tenets of Western society. Think about where this leads.

  • So the Victorian Police wait almost a full year (to the end of the football season in fact) before they consider charging Fevola over the Brownlow Medal incident. I wonder how many other accused criminals get similar consideration. This is the real story. Bring on the Royal Commission.

  • Paddy - obviously Irish. In Australia it's not a criminal offence to make a dickhead of yourself - even at the Brownlow but that still doesn't mean people can go around making up malicious tales about him. So either put up or shut up!

Fev Still Innocent Thursday 9 September, 2010 - 9:08 PM
  • Fev is innocent, did you read the story. No criminal charges from the brownlow night doesn't equal innocent. He made a knob of himself, in public, AGAIN. I say he behaved like a dickhead at the Brownlow. Slander, not hardly. The standard defence against slander is proof. Do you really think I would have troubling proving he behaved like a dickhead?
This bloke isn't a lovable larakin, he is a man with a very serious problem with alcohol and gambling. Maybe we should be concentrating on pressuring him or the AFL to get him some help. You don't have to believe the worst, he pops it out on display with monotonous regularity

  • Tried and found guilty - no benefit of the doubt for Fevola. He certainly has done some stupid things over the years and I think these things are catching up with him now...the latest so far unsubstantiated incident...the excuse for Brisbane Lions to punish him because they've had a woeful season and perhaps getting out of a contract with him to save themselves some money. Fev himself before injury was playing quite well - the main problem was that most of his Lions team mates weren't good enough to deliver the ball properly to him. The whole Lara Bingle thing this year, in my opinion was a publicity stunt cooked up by Bingle and Markson and was a rehash of things that should have been left in the past. Bingle got the publicity she wanted but found out that there is such a thing as bad publicity.

  • It's not news.... why's this here? The man kicks a rubber ball around a grassed paddock, then goes to have a beer. Not newsworthy.
