Review: Whitney Houston in Melbourne

IMAGE: Whitney Houston wipes down at Melbourne show.
REVIEW: Many arrived at Rod Laver Arena with very low expectations to see for themselves whether Whitney Houston, the diva who's sold hundreds of millions of records, still had it.
Interstate critics and even devoted fans had mauled her performances ahead of her Melbourne show, creating an apprehension and anticipation rarely experienced at such concerts.
The die-hard older fans, the drag queens and the teenagers among the crowd showcased Whitney's obvious broad appeal.
She finally appeared on stage and the crowd did go wild. They stood and cheered. They squealed her name. Then they listened.
Whitney had a wild, slightly kooky energy as she punched the air, strutted, fidgeted, played with her gorgeous curls, and spoke to the audience. "It's such a pleasure to be back, not only in Australia but in Melbourne. Been a long time."
As the songs were sung, excitement waned for some fans. "She was breathless", "I will never, ever see her again", "She can't hit the high notes anymore" and "People have a right to a refund".
The curious behaviour continued with a 20-minute absence from the stage during which she changed from a frumpy faux fur vest and silver leggings into a shiny black mini-dress.
She sweated profusely, coughed a little, at times looked a little distracted and relied heavily on her excellent backing vocalists.
Then she had a dig at the media, laughing and sniggering at 'the media who always try to take us down'.
Whitney continued her big hits. The roars of delight continued from the crowd as she pranced and warbled but I have to ask, is it really okay for a mega-star to mop the dripping sweat from between her legs with a white towel on stage and in full view of 12,000 adoring fans?
She also applied lippie and powdered her nose on stage.
A fan emailed the promoter asking for a refund. It's understood that this is the response: "Thank you for your feedback on Whitney's concert. We are sorry that you did not enjoy it but personal disappointment in an artist’s performance does not entitle you to a refund."
Tears coming, Bingle exposed
Peter Ford tells Ross and John the Whitney Houston tour has now reached
the farcical level and says he has no doubt the whole thing will end in
tears. Ford also reveals a naked image of Lara Bingle, allegedly taken
by Brendan Fevola, is about to hit the press.

We are not naive! We were promised a real show and I paid to see Whitney PERFORM and not to hear her talk about Jesus and Michael Jackson, attempt to sing a few lines of her songs and fail miserably at it. That was pathetic.
It's about time that the promoter realises that we are not stupid down under and put up with such poor performances. I think we have a right to demand a refund. The more people we get together the better our chances are.
I have set up an email at: whitney.refund at gmx.net and if you would like to join us, send me an email.

It is very sad to hear about Whitney. She has the courage to go on. I remember the Judy Garland debacle in 1964 in Melbourne, where she was castrated by the press etc, and was such a disappoinment. There are parallels. Unfortunately Whitney I think will become a legend like Judy for all the reasons. let's hope things get better for her. Garland, later was able to salvage her career at times before her death in 1969. let's hope Whitney can do the same.

I went to the concert in the Hunter Valley and was apalled at the whole show. She staggered round on stage, coughed through the songs, powdered her nose mid performance, talked instead of sung most of the songs, and didn't finish any songs. My teeth hurt from gritting them so much during the show. Everyone who has bought tickets has been taken for a ride.

People are fools if they went to Whitney's concert expecting to hear the same power voice she had in her 20's. I went to her concert with an open mind and considered her age and the abuse her body has sustained before critically judging her in the same way some Aussie fans did... I mean seriously, cut her some slack! I would much rather pay to see Whitney attempt to belt out her classic ballads than attend any of the modern artists 'sing' over-sexualised lyrics with computerised assistance. Well done Whit, you're a great entertainer!

I admire Whitney Houston and would pay any amount of money to see perfection. Her voice is beyond words and she has proven herself as one of the best singers on the planet. Whitney is brave and courageous and she knows the game of show business. Don't let them break you Whitney. Your album is great and I listen to it every and all day. You proved alot of people wrong when you returned so successfully. Still, no one compares to you.
