Rice gives a teary apology

Posted by: Luca Gonano for 3AW.com.au | 8 September, 2010 - 5:56 PM

Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice made a teary public apology over her homophobic slur on Twitter this afternoon, telling the packed room of media that she has learnt a huge lesson.

The Triple Olympic gold medallist labelled her comments "thoughtless and careless" and apologised to those who she had let down.

Rice tweeted "Suck on that faggots!" following the Wallabies' dramatic Tri Nations weekend win over the Springboks early on Sunday.

"I owe it to those who I have offended to publicly say, I am sorry. It is not me to give offence to other people no matter who they are," Rice said.

"I am not a person who judges others or speaks in a way that hurts others.

"My comments were thoughtless and careless but I can assure you when I made those comments on Twitter I never intended to offend anybody.

"I've learnt a lot in the last couple of days.

"I've learnt I must think before I speak and this has been a very important lesson.

"I've also learnt that some things you say can mean more to others than they do to you."

The 22-year-old had her contract with luxury car company Jaguar torn up yesterday over the comments.

"I felt I've let a lot of people down," she said.

"I just want people to know how sorry I am.

"I'm just here to gain people's trust back and show how out of character it was."

  • Why don't her critics take their todlers to some parks I know and admire the filthy view and actions. May be they will learn to be as weird and later get involved as well given that this is the trend they are promoting now. May be one day they will be part of the weird fixtures and will all be of the same sex nation.
    Yuk.

  • Stephie has nothing to hide. She is a real. They are not. What a disgrace it is when perversion and depravity rule our lives and our freedoms. The more I see them now the more I hate them. My friends are real too. And they concur with me. Because I am real as well. What about your critics?
They will hide for ever. I am sure they will.

  • Tall Poppy Syndrome wins. There is the point entirely! What you want is a world where innocent school children don't call people "faggot" because they understand that it is wrong to use the word in such a way. I don't think Rice deserves the lynching that she is getting but it would seem that unfortunately, nor unlike poor old Brendan, the message needs to be ground in too get through. After her little facebook fiasco, you would have thought someone would have learnt about the damage that can be caused to ones personal credibility by the airing private things in public media. Time to give the girl a break now and move on though
